DEKALB, 111.—Dekalb Gene
tics Corporation said that it has
received notice of allowance from
the U.S. Patent and Trademark
Office for claims to com cells that
have been transformed via electro
poration technology.
Electroporation, a method of
introducing foreign genes into
com cells with an electrical pulse,
in an alternative to introducing
foreign genes with a gene gun.
“Electroporation is a viable
means of producing genetically
transformed, fertile corn plants,
and we expect these patent claims
to offer licensing opportunities,”
said Bruce P. Bickner, Dekalb’s
chairman and chief executive
billion seed company in 1984. He
is retiring from Pioneer and has
announced plans to teach at the
Harvard Business School. Urban,
who has both undergraduate and
MBA degrees from Harvard, also
serves as a director of Equitable of

HARRISBURG (Dauphin
Co.) —When buying firewood,
consumers should be careful to
make sure they don’t get stuck
with the short end of the stick,
according to Agriculture Secre
tary Charles C. Brosius.
“Firewood must be sold by the
cord, or some fraction thereof,”
Brosius said. “Consumers should
be aware that the amount of fire
wood they’re buying must con
form to a specific measurement
standard.”

officer. “These claims are also sig
nificant because they broaden the
scope of a patent on the electropo
ration process to make transgenic
com that Dekalb received earlier
in the year.”
In January 1993, Dekalb was
awarded a U.S. patent
(#5,384,253) for a method of pro
ducing genetically transformed
corn with electroporation. The
two patent claims go hand in hand,
covering both the electroporation
method itself and the resulting
transformed cells that make up a
com plant.

The slightly raised 18 inch right

ly charged with material, reducing
pressure and overloading of

machine.
The 8014 joins the 8018, 8024,
and 8030 Pro Twin models with
capacities ranging from 1,240 to
3,080 gallons. These units handle
the heaviest pen pack material
with ease.
Separately, Dekalb announced
it has recently been awarded
patent #5,445,961 for a method of
producing fertile corn plants from
microspores, which are immature
pollen grains. Microspores are an
important target for transforma
tion because they enable direct
selection of recessive traits and
reduce the number of subsequent
breeding steps to develop com
mercial com hybrids. “This patent
reflects another aspect of our
patent portfolio, which includes
some of the technologies—such as
tissue culture —that underlie gene
tic engineering,” Bickner said.
Distribute
these new hybrids, NG7059,
under the Mycogen label.
James Hopkins, vice president
and general manager of Mycogen
Plant Sciences, said that Cargill’s
strong distribution network in the
western com belt, where com bor
er damage costs farmers hundreds
of millions of dollars in yield los
ses each year, makes the distribu
tion arrangement attractive to
Mycogen.
‘This will enable us to bring
these new insect-resistant pro
ducts to more farmers sooner than
we could working alone,” Hopk
ins said.
