Grand champion market hog went to Brian Mentzer, 14, in the 9th grade at Spring-Ford High School. The champion swine was sold to Speck’s Family Restaurant, Limerick, for $1.31 a pound. The seven-year Montgomery County Livestock Club member also picked up grand champion pen of hogs. Reserve champion market hog went to Jacob Garges: Jacob, 13, an Bth grader in Penn View Christ ian School, sold the 220-pound reserve champion to Leidy’s Meats for S2.SS a pound. Reserve champion pen went to Shawn Mentzer, 19, a freshman at Alvemis College majoring in jour nalism and communications. Shawn also won reserve grand champion showman. Isaac Garges showed the grand champion market steer and was also named grand champion beef showman and reserve champion fitter. The grand champion, weigh ing 1,270 pounds, sold to Rick and Ellen Baum for $1.15 a pound. Isaac, 18, a senior at Christopher Dock and North Montgomery Tech School, is president of the county livestock club. Isaac also showed the grand champion market goat, weighing 65 pounds and purchased by Hart man Boer Goat Company for $3.10 per pound. Isaac also won grand champion fitter and reserve grand champion showman in the goat show. Reserve market goat was shown by Lizzie Moser, and vas pur chased by Black’s Livestock Inc. for $2.30 a pound. Lizzie was named reserve champion filter. Md. Names Associate Deans COLLEGE PARK, Md. Dr. Thomas A. Fretz, dean of the Col lege of Agriculture and Natural Resources at the University of Maryland at College Park (UMCP), has announced two ap pointments to the college’s admin istrative team, effective Aug. 1. Dr. Marla Mclntosh has been named associate dean for aca demic programs and Dr. J. Scott Angle has been chosen associate dean and associate director of the Maryland Agricultural Experi ment Station. Angle and Mclntosh are profes sors in the college’s Department of Agronomy. Both have been ser ving in their new positions on an acting basis. Their permanent ap pointments follow an exhaustive nationwide search and interviews with several highly qualified candidates. Mclntosh holds three degrees from the University of Illinois; a bachelor’s and master’s in forestry and a doctorate in agronomy. Since joining the UMCP faculty in 1979, she has written or co aulhorcd two book chapters and 45 articles in refereed journals. Her research has concentrated on genetic resource conservation of crop plants and sludge application to forests. The hog was purchased by Hat field Quality Meats. in the classroom as well as the la boratory has earned her several special awards, including the Out standing Teaching Award from the Northeast Branch of the American Society of Agronomy, the Agriculture Alumni Teaching Excellence Award, and the title of distinguished scholar-teacher for the 1993-1994 school year. Angle earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in agronomy from UMCP and his doctorate from the University of Missouri, Columbia.
