MORVAY Maryland Correspondent TIMONIUM, Md.—Maryland has chosen three dairy judging teams to represent the state at upcoming competitions in Harris burg, Pa.; Louisville, Ky.; and Madison, Wis. The state’s collegiate team will attend all three competitions. Members are Marie Speak of Car roll County, Mark lager of How ard County, Sean Johnson of Howard County, and Bob Fogle of Frederick County. The 4-H team competing at Harrisburg and Madison is Jessica Fritz of Carroll County, Darren Remsburg of Frederick County, Mark Schnelby of Washington County, and Chris Seymour of Howard County. The 4-H team going to Louis ville, Ky. in November consists of Kristin Myers of Carroll County, Amy lager of Howard County. Erin Goulet of Montgomery County, and Emily Birch of Har ford County. Dr. Lee Majeski, extension dairy specialist and associate pro fessor at the University of Mary land, is the driving force behind the state’s program. Majeski said this year’s com petition was the largest ever. A Duroc gilt bred and owned by David and Bettie Holloway, Glen Rock, Pa., took supreme champion female swine honors here at the Maryland State Fair. This is only'the third time in the past decade that Maryland has had a collegiate dairy judging team. Majeski worked with teams in 1987 and 1993. Both of those teams finished in the top ten nationally with a number of high individual winners, he recalled. Marie Speak and Mark lager, members of this year’s collegiate team, competed on the award winning Maryland 4-H Dairy Judging Team that went to Europe in 1992. Majeski is being assisted this year by graduate student Kathar ine Knowlton and coach Jeff Sem ler, a 4-H agent in Harford County. Swine Champion female has placed first in the open class, all-breed show at the fair. The 290-pound Jim Dandy daughter, bom March 10, 1995, had a -1.7 epd for growth and a - .01 epd on backfat. She was 140 days to 230 pounds, at which time she had a .69 inch backfat. On the dam side the pig is an Ice Pick daughter. Judging Teams-To Compete lesser one. The biology of com posting, worm composting, wild flower meadows, and other alter natives to lawns, and compost bin construction are just some of the topics to be covered in the upcom ing master composter training at the new Montgomery Township building. The Ken Winebark family of Myerstown, Pa. took the supreme champion individual market bar row award with their homebred and raised hampshire barrow. The Winebarks are no strangers to suc cess at Timonium with this line of pigs the mother of this pig was a class winner at the Maryland State Fair the first year the family showed here. “It’s basically for the kids.” Ken Winebark said, speaking of the family’s three-sow enterprise.
