Correspondent HUNTINGDON (Huntingdon Co.) —After coming close several times, Naomi Speer’s My-Favorite Vanguard Kandi won grand champion of the Central Pennsyl vania Championship Show in Huntingdon. Held at the Hunting don Fairgrounds, Speer said the win mc'.it a lot to her. “She’s my first 94-point cow. She’s generations down from the first cow my father gave me,” Speer said. “She didn’t do well when she was yoyng and gets bet ter the older she gets.” The aged cow has two daughters that Speer hopes will fol’ow suit in the show ring. My-Favorite Vanguard Kan di was also selected the best bred and owned animal of the show. Judge Gary Derr of Derrwyn Holsteins in New Windsor, Md., said he enjoyed working with an outstanding group of people and cows. He gave reserve grand champion honors to Globe-Run Jethro Violet owned by R. C. Nor ris and Globe Run Farm. He described this cow as an extremely easy win in her 4-year-old class and said she easily won the class’s best udder award. Rebecca Kelly fared well in the junior exhibitor show. Her 5-year old. Spring-Lane Melvin Bret, was selected grand champion by a junior exhibitor and received the best bred and owned award. Reserve grand champion by a junior exhibitor went to the second place 5-ycar-old, Globe-Run Top- Gun Oslo, owned by Lory Ann Baker. In the junior heifer show, junior champion for all exhibitors, including youth, went to Troy Young and his spring yearling, JCY Broker Rachel - ET. Amanda Cessna earned reserve junior champion with her winter calf, Brush-Creek-Vu Charles Kala. John A. and Alice L. Foster of Globe Run Farm received the pre-' mier breeder and exhibitor awards. G. Sheldon Peachey of Belle ville sold the high cow at Mifflin County’s Summer Classic sale held in August at the Mifflin Coun ty Youth Park. Blessed-Acres Mascot Patches brought $3,300 in a final bid placed by Bruce Snider of Imler, Pennsylvania. By the end of the evening, 50 lots sold for a sale total of $70,975 and an average sale price of $1,420. Championship Show Held Brookside Queen, for $2,600, con signed by Darvin and Liven Yoder of Belleville. Kara Tussey of Huntingdon consigned the third highest cow. It was bought by Scott and Julieann Longenbach of North Hampton for $2,475. Steven and Barbara Wilson of Port Royal sold Rose-Edge F P Marisa for $2,000 to Theodore and Patricia Miller of Pilesgrove, NJ. Ken Rainey of the Pennsylvania Holstein Association compli mented Paul Neer of the Mifflin County Holstein Club for his efforts in sale selections. He was pleased with the favorable support from local people in both buying and selling. Paul Neer stepped to the microphone before the sale to say that the animals parading the sale ring could be bought with confidence. Prior to the sale, several items were auctioned off to benefit the Mifflin County Holstein Club, the Dairy Princess committee, and the Mifflin County 4-H Judging Team, including a Bonnie Mohr print which Danny Albright bought for $lBO. A chicken bar beque before the sale benefitted the Mifflin County 4-H Dairy Club. State Junior Jersey Herd To NAILE LIBERTY (Tioga Co.) This fall, junior Jersey breeders will have the opportunity to take their cows down South to compete in the North American International Livestock Exposition (NAILE) in Louisville, Kentucky. Animals will be selected from each class at the Pennsylvania Junior Dairy Show on September 23, by a committee made up of senior Jersey Associatio members and spearheaded by Debbie Moose. Owners of the selected animals will receive an invitation to be a part of the Pennsylvania herd as the animals are placed in each class, and will have to decide if their animals will be a part of the herd by the aid of the show day. Approximately IS animals will be selected. The Pennsylvania association will handle trucking arrangements and will care for the animals while at the show. Melanie Dietrich is this year’s head caretaker. Junior exhibitors will be expected to cov er about half of the cost of the trip with the remaining funding com ing from independent sponsors. The junior show is set for Satur- day, November 4,1995 and will be followed by the All American Banquet and Junior Fun Fest. Ani mals will remain on the premises for the open dairy show which is set for Monday, November 6. While at the exposition center, junior Jersey enthusiasts will have the opportunity to see Jerseys from across the United States and Cana da and meet fellow Jersey breeders from around the world. They will also be able to witness Pennsylva nia Jersey Queen Joy Vance com pete for the title of 1995 National Jersey Jug Queen at ceremonies during the weekend activities. The National Queen will preside over the National Jersey Jug Futurity competition to be held Sunday, November 5. The trip, sponsored in part by the Pennsylvania Jersey Cattle Association, is an annual under taking by the club and its mem bers. “We’ve been doing this for over 20 years continuously,” said David Norman, secretary of the association. Besides having the opportunity to travel with the suite herd to Louisville, Kentucky, the Pennsyl vania Jersey Association is plan ning a pizza party and a Junior Jersey Association meeting for all Junior Jersey exhibitors on Sunday evening, September 23, at the Pen nsylvania All American Dairy Show.
