Dairy 4-H’ers Receive Scholarships Five Crawford County 4-H dairy youth will each receive $5OO scholarships to attend schools of higher education this fall. Beth Bly, Kathleen Duncan. Janyelle Hunter, Crystal Miller, and Leslie Pegan are the recipients of this year’s Crawford County 4-H Dairy Leaders’ Scholarships. Beth Bly, of Titusville, will attend Penn State University at the University Park campus to begin her college degree. She is enrolled in the associate transfer program, pursu ing a bachelor’s degree in dairy science. Janyelle Hunter has completed six semesters at Penn State Univer sity, majoring in agronomy and agricultural economics. Janyelle is from Meadville. Crystal Miller will begin her sophomore year at Penn State Uni versity, University Park. She is majoring in dairy science. Crys tal’s family resides in the Cam bridge Springs area. The final recipient of the 1995 scholarships is Leslie Pegan. Leslie, also from Cochran ton, has already completed her first year at the University of Pittsburgh at Titusville in the physical therapist assistant program. The $2,500 in awards comes from several different donations. Donations to the fund have been accepted from several groups, organizations, and individuals. Annually, during the Crawford County Fair, eligible 4-H members auction one day’s cheese equiva lent of milk from their 4-H project animal. In the past, several buyers have donated their cheese back to the leaders, which is then resold with the money going to die Scho larship fond. The 1994 Cheese Yield Auction generated $7lO toward the scholarship fond. Generally, there are only three scholarships granted. However, since only one person received an award last year, and since each of this year’s applicants qualified, the Crawford County 4-H Dairy Lead ers decided to honor each of the five winners with a scholarship. Distinguished 4-H’ers Announced Thursday evening a special ceremony was conducted at the Montgomery County 4-H Fair to announce the 1995 Distinguished 4-H’ers. In addition to meeting other criteria, these 4-H’ers must show outstanding dedication, maturity, leadership ability, and citizenship qualities. The winners of the Distinguished 4-H’er Award this year were Christine Michalik of Sellersville. Amy Plummer of Chalfont, and Tabitha Landis of Salford. Christine Michalik has spent the past six of her 16 years as a4-H’cr. Christine is involved in many 4-H clubs, including the goat, dairy, livestock, and exchange clubs, in addition to Teen Council. Amy Plummer also was selected as a distinguished 4-H’er. Amy has spent her last 11 years as a 4-H’er. She is a recent graduate of Central Bucks High School West where she was a member of both the Stu dent Government Organization and the National Honor Society and has served as captain of the Science Olympiad Team. Amy was selected to attend the Pennsyl vania Governor’s School for the Agricultural Sciences and is a member of the 4-H Dairy Club, Silver Pads Goat Club, and Nesha miny Explorers 4-H Club. Amy is planning for further education in the field of biology or prevcterin ary science. Tabitha Landis also merited the Distinguished 4-H’er Award. She has been a 4-H’er for the past six years and is a member of the Furry Friends Rabbit and Cavy Club and the Green Pastures Sheep Club. Tabitha has participated in several community service projects with her church and will be a senior at Souderton Area High School this fall. Natalie Lobo led the pledge to the flag, and Zack Reed the 4-H Pledge. Tim Hocker led a discussion on the “I Care” program. Final preparations were made for the August county roundup. The meeting ended with the group working on the club display for the fair. The next meeting will be held at the home of Sonya Rinker. This will be the club picnic. Rabbit, Cavy Bowl Forty-two 4-H mem bers from seven coun ties were quizzed on their knowledge of the care, management, breeding, and showing of rabbits and cavies at the Southeastern Reg ional 4-H Knowledge Bowl Contest at the York County 4-H Cen ter in Bair. Placing first in the senior division was the team from the Mount Joy 4-H Rabbit Club in Lancaster County. Members of the team were Emily Algoe, Joseph Bender. Angela Bentzel, and Karen Keyser. The team was coached by Dwight and Sarah Algoe. The junior contest was won by Team 1 from the Berks County Rabbit and Cavy Lovers 4-H Club; Team mem bers were Josh Behler, Nathan Kramer, Naomi Schaeffer, and Sarah Westley.
