Enjoying ANDY ANDREWS Lancaster Farming Staff “I don’t consider myself com petitive, but. .. ” Kirsten Kauffman shrugged, moving some of her long, blond hair from her eyes, moments after winning the top 4-H honor last week at 4-H Achievement Night at the Farm and Home Center. Kirsten, 17, daughter of Ken and Margaret Kauffman, Elizabeth town, was honored as 4-H Super ior Achievement Award winner during ceremonies in front of her 4-H friends and family. Kirsten, a senior this year at Elizabethtown High School, was already thinking about her next competition scheduled the very next day at the District 6 Horse Show at the Leba non Fairgrounds. Kirsten was honored for her involvement as president of the Saddle Stiches Club. She recently competed in the Solid Gold Futuri ty competition, working with Chincoteague ponies. Kirsten also works with her weanling coit and a 6-year-old. But she said she derives special satisfaction in working with the younger members of 4-H. “Working with the new kids and seeing them achieve is really great,” she said. Kirsten enjoys the challenge with “all aspects of 4-H. “You have to working for something in the program. 4-H is not like school assignments. You have to set goals for yourself.” The 4-H’er became involved in the county 4-H program through a friend, Heather Oberholtzer, and the Saddle Stitches 4-H Club. Kirsten said that she enjoys competition at the state level. Last year, she won a national award for public speaking. She plans to show sheep at the Elizabethtown Fair. Kirsten, a four-year member of 4-H, wants to attend college to major in English. She is a copy edi tor on the school’s yearbook staff. Also honored at the event were the senior honor roll members, Maggie Strausbaugh, Tracy Bol linger, Kirsten Kauffman, and Durelle Leaman. Junior honor roll members include Sarah Boyd, James Mullen, and Janine Leaman.
