Maryland Farm Queen To Be Crowned TIMONIUM, Md. The reigning Maryland Farm Queen, Miss Jami M. Todd of Caroline County, will have the honor of crowning her successor, the 199 S Maryland Farm Queen, who will be selected at the Maryland Farm Queen Contest, Sunday. August 27, 7 p.m., in the State Fair Cow Palace. Young women, between the ages of 16 and 19, who have earn ed their place in the 1995 Mary land Farm Queen Contest by win ning county Farm Bureau-spon sored contests, will compete for this renowned title, tiaras supplied by Littman Jewelers in Cranberry Mall, and scholarship and cash awards valued up to $4,000. The Wilcoxs classify their Jersey herd and about 75 percent of the herd is registered. The herd is pastured twice a day throughout the summer. In addi tion to pasture, their feeding ra tions consist of 15 pounds of ground com and soybean grain, 20 pounds of high moisture shelled com, and 5 pounds of hay. In the winter with pasture time reduced, the herd’s hay ration is increased to 25 to 30 pounds. Sam and Christine’s daughters take an active part in the family farm with the raising and showing of cows. Samantha is president of the Classical Cows 4-H Club. Her cow Debbie was 4-H and Open Class Grand Champion at the Tio ga County Fair in 1994 and went on to become the 4-H and Open Grand Champion at the District Show in Wyoming County. Christie has had the Reserve Grand Champion cow for three years at the Tioga County Fair. During Farm-City Day, visitors were treated to wagon tours of the fields where volunteers were round baling and plastic wrapping hay. A bam tour provided insight on how the milking operation works twice a day in the summers and three times a day (6 a.m., 2 p.m., and 10 p.m.) between De cember and February to accom modate Sam and Christine’s at tendance at Christie’s high school basketball games. Contests open to the general public included wire splicing, bale throwing, and a kid die pedal tractor pull. Demonstra tions scheduled throughout the day involved sheep shearing, milking, catde judging, rope mak ing, Christmas tree pruning and shipping, wool spinning. Round ing out the festivities were exhib its involving artificial semination, machinery and toy farm equip ment, and the ever popular petting zoo.
