GAY BROWNLEE Somerset Co. Correspondent MEYERSDALE (Somerset Co.) The 4-year-old cow of Willard Maust, Meyersdale, was named grand champion of the Somerset District Holstein Show, held last week at the Somerset County fairgrounds. Elk-Lick Southwind Faithie was judged as the finest animal of some 89 Holsteins in the junior and senior shows, and had the best udder in her class, according to judge Kress Simpson from Mans- Held in Tioga County. Faithie is of South wind Bell of Bar-Lee, a home bred animal with Hve generations of home bred behind her. She was her class champion and senior show champion. Maust and his wife, Ella live on the homestead of her childhood and also own the farm where he was raised. Of the 300 acres in the family operated farm, 150 are till able. Alan Thomas of Bruceton Mills, W. Va. t had the reserve grand champion which was shown in the junior 2-year-old class. Tho mas shares ownership of the ani mal witih David Dowler, also from Bruceton Mills. Senior grand champion in the junior show as Quaker-Farm As trojet Sue Ellen, owned by Kirsten Miller, Boswell. Her brother, Ben Miller, Boswell, had the junior show reserve grand champion with Milbro Lindys Illusion. The premier breeder title was awarded to Cessna Brothers who come from Clearville in Bedford Md.-Oakview Mark Kix Is Grand At Central District Championship WEST FRIENDSHIP. Md. Holstein showers from a four-county area in Maryland held their Central District Champion ship Show July 17, at the Howard County Fairgrounds, in West Friendship. Marlin Hoff, of New Windsor, showed the senior and grand champion Holstein, a 5-year-old cow, Md.-Oakview Made Kix. Taking reserve grand champion honors was Milvalley Astro Martha, a senior 3-year-old shown by Paul Harrison and Mike lager, Burkittsville. There were 107 head of cattle shown representing Holstein own ers from Baltimore, Carroll, Har ford and Howard counties. John Burket, of Burket-Falls Farm in East Freedom, Pa., was show judge. Jenell Rinehart, of Rinehart Farm, in Taneytown, was judge for showmanship and fitting. According to the judge, there were strong classes of animals with high quality and he was pleased with the champions. A haio rain during the show didn’t deter observers, as a large crowd was in attendence to the event with Carroll County as host The open division junior champion was a winter calf Md.-Dun-Loacin Altair Season, shown by Shannon Harrison, also of Burkittsville. The open division reserve junior champion was a spring yearling, Celmcroft Broker Erin, shown by Amy lager, of Fulton. In the youth division, the senior and grand champion Holstein was Fathie Grand At Somerset District Holstein Show County. Five members of the family attended the show. Melinda Thomas, Bruceton Mills was the premier exhibitor in the senior show. There was a tie between Ben Miller, Boswell and Dan Ream, Markleton, for the title of premier breeder in the junior show. Then Miller was named premier exhibi tor. Showpersons and breeders came from numerous communi ties in the county. Others came from Garrett County, Maryland and Redford County. The championship trophies and T-shirts for the - first place junior winners were purchased through a donation to the Somerset County Junior Holstein Club by Walker’s Farm Service Inc., Somerset. Amy Paul, the Somerset Coun ty dairy princess presented tro phies and ribbons with help from a former dairy princess Stephanie Singo. Bob Brown, the Somerset County extension agent was the announcer.
