Marketing agricultural products'in an increasingly compe titive world is becoming a serious problem for the American farmer. Faced with increasing competi tion from abroad, increasing oper ating costs for machinery, sup plies, and equipment, and lower prices for most of the commodities produced, farmers across the nation must look for new ways to market their products. As tradi tional marketing avenues begin to lose some of their effectiveness, new ideas and marketing approaches are critically needed. One such approach is currendy making the rounds in fanning cir cles. The idea is simple in concep tion and involves the bartering of processed agricultural products in the international market With milk prices running below $l3 per hundred weight the notion of bar tering cheese, butter, evaporated and powdered milk on the interna tional market for manufactured goods that can be sold in the United States for a higher price has attracted the attention of a number of Pennsylvania farmers. On March 27, a group of about SO interested Lancaster County farmers met at the Hoffman Build ing in Quarryvillc to discuss the possibility of producers’ using a vertical integration strategy to improve- the profitability of form- Kevin Smoker-1 st high indiv. overall, Nathan Howe-28th overall. Research mg operations. Discussion included how the idea might be implemented, timeframes for doing so, and how the concept fits into established farm business pro cedures. Farmers at the meeting were unanimous in their feeling that this approach was worthy of additional study and approved the establishment of a commission to pursue the matter. Among the reasons cited for moving in this direction was the desirability of marketing pro cessed farm products in other countries such as the former Soviet Bloc, the Southeast Asia Trade Bloc, and South America where supply is lower and demand is higher. Traditional marketing techniques break down in those areas due to the lack of hard cur rencies. Bartering overcomes that barrier by accepting a marketable manufactured product rather than hard currencies. At the initial meeting of the approved commission on April 10 at a farm in the Quarry ville area, an organizational structure was estab lished and a name was adopted.
