Thanks to Mrs. David Early, Annville; Lucille Werley, Hamburg; Doris Brenize, Shippensburg; Leora Petet, and others for sending directions. 1 can lye '/a cup Clorox % cup Borax 3 quarts cold water minus 5 tablespoons 9 cups lard Dissolve lye in water, using enamel pan. Stir. Add Clorox and Borax. Pour in melted lard and stir well. Set aside and stir every hour that day. Cut when hard. Line the molds with plastic before starting; there will be no time later. Lye Solution: Use enamelware or stainless steel bowl, use a stainless steel spoon for mixing. Dissolve 1 can lye in one quart cold water. The mixture gets very hot, be very careful to avoid splashes on the skin. Let the mixture stand until cold. Grease: Heat 5'A pounds grease until lukewarm. Use a 10-quart enamelware or stainless bowl to combine the grease and the lye mixture. Stir constantly while adding the lye water. Mix these ingredients; 2 tablespoons powdered borax 2 tablespoons sugar 'A cup water 'A cup ammonia 1 teaspoon salt Add the mixture to the lye and grease Stir together for about 10 to 20 minutes until emulsion is formed. In warm weather, the container may be lowered into cold water to help the mixture thicken. When the mixture is the consistency Of pea soup, it is ready to pour. Pour Into pre pared molds and check in about 12 hours, then cut into cakes. The soap is ready to use in 2 to 3 weeks, but will last longer if allowed to dry longer.
