816-Lancaster Farming, Saturday, January 21, 1995 Ida’s Notebook Ida Risser The other week my husband and I drove to the Pennsylvania State Farm Show. It is nice to get out of the house in wintertime and mingle with other people. We cer tainly could do that when we final ly got there. I would not be sur prised if some first-time visitors decided not to go,£gain as many had to sit more than hour in a bare ly moving line of traffic in order to park. We parked at the Harrisburg Community College and took the shuttle bus to the front entrance of the Farm Show Complex. As we are senior citizens, we did not have to pay bus fare. This year the bus was not even crowded in the Safety Tips at y2iBOSBSUSt 22unmm. 2?uaaiwaßa f^.. My husband tells me that he attended the Farm Show in down town Harrisburg in the 1920’5. At that time it was held in several buildings near Mulberry Street. He took a baby beef to the show and says that it was a treat to get “Polar Bear” bars of ice cream. Even then baked potatoes were a featured food. The present buildings are so large that I had to hunt for some of the things that I wanted to see. There were so many rabbits and so much poultry. The quilts in the Family Corner were especially beautiful. I simply cannot imagine doing all of that quilting as the pat terns were intricate. The number of apiary products displayed also surprised me and of course I was interested in the vegetable dis plays. If you got tired, there were both cooking and flower arranging demonstrations to attend. Howev er, I walked most of the day and only saw a few people that I knew out of the big, big crowd. Some times, I feel like missing a year so that things will seem new to hie again.
