812-Lancaster Farming, Saturday, October 8, 1994 Becker Shows Champion Market Hog At Manheim LOU ANN GOOD Lancaster Farming Staff MANHEIM (Lancaster Co.) Melissa Becker has watched her sisters, Karen.and Amy, capture the trophy for showing die overall champion market hog. Monday night was Melissa’s turn. The 16-year-old showed a Duroc-Hamp cross at Manheim Farm Show to top 130 entries. The Becker family lives in Manheim but keeps about 30 pigs on an Eli zabethtown farm. The sisters, daughters of Marlin and Nancy Becker, brought 12 of the hogs to show, and ended up with Five first placings in individual classes. Judge Ken Winebark, Lebanon County extension agent, said that the 261-pound heavyweight champion is a really complete hog that levels off at the top, has a sleek body, and is productive appearing, while maintaining leaness. Showing the reserve champion market hog was Travis Donough. The 244-pound hog was also the medium weight champion. Travis, the son of Ed and Laßue Donough of Manheim, also showed the champion lightweight. Travis and his brother Ryan are consistent winners in both swine and sheep competition at county fairs. Other section wins went to Pam Lehman, who showed the reserve lightweight champion; Brandon Forry, who showed the reserve medium weight; Adam Forry, who showed the champion medium heavyweight; Suzy Miller, who showed the reserve medium heavyweight; and Jared Forry, who showed the reserve heavyweight Showmanship competition was divided into four classes. In the 16-and-over class, Tina Umbrell, daughter of Dennis and Linda Umbrell of Elizabethtown, took first honors. The 19-year-old has been showing some of the off spring of the family’s 360-sow operation for seven years. Tina graduated from high school two years ago and works part time as a nursing assistant and part time on the family farm. In the 14- to 15-year-old show manship class, Amy Bollinger placed first. She is a consistent winner in showmanship with hon ors from FFA, 4-H roundup, and Ephrata Fair competitions earlier this season. She is the daughter of Eugene and Carol Bollinger of Manheim. Thirteen-year-old* Lisa Pfautz placed first in the 11- to 13-year old division.
