New regulations under the Worker Protection Standards for Agricultural Pesticides will be explained at a meeting on Thurs day, April 14 at 9 a.m. at Thomp son’s Dairy Bar. Sponsored jointly by Pennsyl vania Farm Bureau, the Depart ment of Agriculture and Lacka wanna County Cooperative Extension, the all-day program will include an overview of the regulations and the responsibili ties of anyone who uses agricul tural pesticides, how employers must train their workers who do not use pesticides, some legal implications of the standards, and new regulations for farm labor housing. These standards will affect any one who owns or manages a farm, forest, nursery, or greenhouse where pesticides are used in the production of agricultural plants. Even if the grower has no employees, he or she will have some responsibilities under these standards. If workers are hired the owner is obligated to train them in pesticide safety even if they don’t handle or apply the pesticide. The effective dale for these standards is April IS, and growers need to leant what will be required of them to protect themselves and their workers. Following a social at 5:30 p.m., the dinner begins at 7 p.m. According to John Hoffman, Federation president, the banquet is the primary source of funds for the state poul try federation, which benefits producers in a wide range of services, including legislation and government rela tions, disease control, research, promotion, publications, youth programs, conferences, and scholarships. The featured menu includes fresh melon nail cocktail, tropical salad with honey mus tard eggs and walnuts, chicken marsala for the main dish, whipped potatoes, stir fry veget ables, rolls, butler, beverage, and chocolate parfait. Entertainment will be provided by Louise Mandrell.
