KUTZTOWN (Berks Co.) The Kutztown Young Fanners awarded some of their members for their outstanding achieve ments. David and Kathy Schantz of Al burtis received the Community Service Award. David and Kathy have three children Megan 8, Matheu 6, and Nathan 1. They farm in partnership with David’s parents, known as Showtop Farms. They have 350 registered Holstein cows and heifers. They raise grain and forage to feed the cattle. The Schantz family won this award for services conducted in the community and surrounding area. David is president of Kutz town Young Farmers and the past two years he served as vice presi dent. He chaired many commit tees this past year, including fund raising for the 1993 state conven tion held in Reading. At the same time, David is pre sident of Berks-Lehigh Sire Power district. David belongs to many organizations including the Hol stein Association, young farmers, DHIA, Atlantic Breeders Co operative, Agway Inc., and Oley Valley Fair Assn. Jon and Holly Stutzman won the Outstanding Young Farmer Award Under 30 at Hesston Col lege in Kansas and obtained his degree in agriculture science at Penn State. Jon is employed by Brubaker Agronomics Consulting Service. Holly graduated from Penn State as a registered nurse. She has worked in the operating room in Allentown Osteopathic Hospital. They both are Sunday School teachers at Oley Mennonite Church, and Joa served as a coun cil member. They live outside of Lyons in a 1780 farm house which they restored. They have three children Jama 26; Daniel, 24; and David 18. Carol is a sales person who sells contemporary mirror art for a New York firm. Gerhard and his brother Ru dolph farm 500 acres of com, wheat, soybeans, and hay. They dry and store all grain in large bins, so they can sell when the prices are up. They also have 35 head of beef cattle. Gerhard is treasurer of Kutztown Young Farmers. The Kutztown Young Farmers gave other awards at this event. A Donald Reinert Scholarship Fund was started when Donald retired UNIVERSITY PARK (Centre Co.) The American Sheep Industry Association presented Clair C. Engle its Camptender Award at its 1994 Convention in Reno last month. The Camptender Award recog nizes Engle, Penn State associate professor of animal science, for his leadership and service to both the Pennsylvania and the national sheep industries. As sheep exten sion specialist, Engle’s education al responsibilities have centered on a variety of production and com modity value-based marketing programs at regional, slate, and multistate levels. Engle works closely with the Pennsylvania Sheep and Wool Growers Association and allied industries in identifying industry needsand conducting applied stu dies and educational activities that Friday, April 1, 1994 Approx. This year the award went to Monica Quemah. , There were other members who were recognized in outstanding com production. David Schantz, in com silage, 36 tons per acid; Kathy Schantz in com yield, 229 bushels per acre; and Kermit' in com quality. A special recognition was given to Noel Schlegel for the work he put into a com test plot, comparing yields, variety, and herbicides. The Kutztown Young Farmers program won the outstanding chapter of the year given by the Pennsylvania Young Farmers As sociation at the 34th winter con vention recently in Lancaster.
