UNIVERSITY PARK (Centre Co.) On Friday, April 8, and Friday, April IS, the Timber Har vesting Council (THC) of Penn sylvania Resources will conduct a series of workshops on forest ecology and silviculture for local timber harvesters at the Donegal Community Center in Donegal. The two-day workshop is the capstone course in the voluntary Pennsylvania Logger Certification Program sponsored by the THC. The council is a consortium of in terests including Penn State Co operative Extension, representa tives of the forest products indus try, the DER Bureau of Forestry, and NORTIM Corp., Pittsburgh logging risk-management com pany. In the spring of 1992, THC ef forts gained support and momen tum with a grant from the USDA Extension Service in Washington to conduct a pilot program in eco logy and silviculture for loggers as part of the national LEAP (Logger Education to Advance Profession alism) project. “Loggers play a critical role in KING CONSTRUCTION CO. ■ Specializing In Heifer & Free-Stall Bams! 80’x300’ Free Stall Building Built In Maryland 32’x180’ Virginia Style Heifer Barn Built In Myerstown Features: Curtain Controlled Ventilation WE BUILD IN PA, MD, DE & NJ Authorized Dealer For: KEYSTONE WAFFLE SLATS KING CONSTRUCTION CO. 601 Overly Grove Rd., New Holland, PA 17557 (717) 354-4740 • Phil Van Lieu (Home): (717) 259-9077 (Continued from Pago D 2) Acre 8.40 8.40 8.40 Acre 9.30 10.30 9.80 Miscellaneous Acre Local Timber Pennsylvania’s forests and an un derstanding of silviculture, which is the art and science of managing a forest ecosystem, will help pro mote sound forestry practices,” said Jim Finley, assistant profes sor of forest resources at Penn State and workshop instructor. “The objective of the training ef fort is to sensitize loggers to en vironmental issues, improve lines of communication with natural re source managers, and bolster the professional image of timber har vesters.” The two-part course is a re quirement for logging contractors and counts toward certification for timber harvesters. Pennsylvania has one of the country’s most comprehensive logger education programs and is fast becoming a model for the rest of the nation. In addition to ecology and silvi culture, it includes 70 hours of training in safety, production, ero sion and sedimentation control, business management and wet lands protection. To date, the ecology and silviculture work shops have been attended by 7S logging contractors and the pro gram is poised for distribution to Pennsylvania’s estimated 3,500 timber harvesters. Cameron County logger Jim Deetscreek sums up his feelings about the program this way: “I care about the woods and 1 want to be the best logger in Pennsylvania Insurance Seminar Set quake, or thunderstorm? This winter’s snow put many bams down and many more build ings were stressed or would have gone down if a strong wind had accompanied the storms. An earth quake such as the one recently in Berks County could hit here. Most owners found out their losses were not covered by insurance. What can you do to prevent this from happening to you or to you again ? The seminar, offered at no cost, will feature Duane Stevenson, Penn State farm management agent and Tim R. Royer, structural engineer with Timber Tech Engi neering, Womelsdorf.
