David Smith, president of the Ephrata Area Young Fanners Association, welcomed farmers to the 2Sth annual EAYFA banquet and gave awards for the 1993 year. Winning the highest herd in milk, fat and protein was Nevin Homing, Millway Road, Lititz. The Homings milk SO cows and have 40 head of youngs lock. Their 1993 production average was 23,318 pounds of milk and 1,516 pounds of fat and protein. The Homing farm includes 110 acres of com, alfalfa, soybeans and bar ley. Nevin is also the recipient of the Active Member Award. Second highest herd in milk, fat and protein was Robert Fox, Clay Road, Lititz. Fox milks 60 cows and raises 35 heifers. Their 1993 production average is 21,280 pounds of milk and 1,447 pounds of fat and protein. The Fox farm consists of ISO acres of com, alfal fa, soybeans, oats, and rye. Leonard Martin, 53 Hahnstown Road, took the award for the high est increase in milk for 1993. His production average was 20,572 pounds of milk and 1,400 pounds of fat and protein, an increase of 1,557 pounds of milk and 64 pounds of fat and protein. Their 1993 production average was 19,953 pounds of milk and 1,247 pounds of Cat and protein, an increase of 1,439 pounds of milk and 66 pounds of fat and protein. The Risser farm includes 70 acres of rye, com and hay. Scott Smith took the poultry production award. ISO capons are raised each year on the property along Swamp Bridge Road, Denver. Steve Martin, Lincoln Gardens Road, Ephrata, won the produce production award along with his family for raising eight acres of produce which includes corn, strawberries, potatoes, beans and many other vegetables. Martins also raise 30,000 broilers. Charles Ackley. 900 Rebecca Drive, Lititz, won the Community Service Award. Ackley has been the past Young Farmer Advisor and worked for Pennsylvania State Extension Service testing pesti cide levels in well water in the eastern half of PA.
