The plan included attending Penn State University to major in animal science and pursuing a degree in veterinary medicine. But something happened along the way. In his senior year at college, dur ing a time he says of particular inner turmoil, he received what he can only describe as a “call from God” to serve in the ministry. What becomes even more mysteri ous was some of the encourage ment he received to pursue that call from the most extraordinary sources. One of those was a professor m ag science who told Sherer that ‘“I have no idea what your plans for the future may be, but you will miss your calling if you don’t include some sort of teaching or speaking.’ “As a young Christian . .. that sounded to me like a very strange choice of words coming from a professor on a sccularcollegc cam pus,” he said.
