“Pastoring isn’t all that much
different (from farming), really. It
seems either way I was destined to
look after sheep.”
That was the testament by Rev.
Seven new directors were elected at the Farm and Home Foundation meeting. They
include, from left, Liiil Ann Kopp, James Kreider, Elvin Hess, Charles Rohrer, and
Mark Hess. Not In picture were Joan Hershey and Larry H. Skromme.

Sherer spoke to about 100
guests during the Foundation’s
banquet as the wind chill outside
measured SO below and many
roads were barely driveable
because of a devastating snow and
ice storm that ravaged the state.
Sherer said that before he

entered college, he had a fully
developed plan mapped out for his
life. The plan included attending
Penn State University to major in
animal science and pursuing a
degree in veterinary medicine.
But something happened along
the way.
In his senior year at college, dur
ing a time he says of particular
inner turmoil, he received what he
can only describe as a “call from
God” to serve in the ministry.
What becomes even more mysteri
ous was some of the encourage
ment he received to pursue that call
from the most extraordinary
sources.
One of those was a professor m
ag science who told Sherer that ‘“I
have no idea what your plans for
the future may be, but you will
miss your calling if you don’t
include some sort of teaching or
speaking.’
“As a young Christian . .. that
sounded to me like a very strange
choice of words coming from a
professor on a sccularcollegc cam
pus,” he said.
