Lolly Lesher, Bemville, won the Pennsylvania Young Far mers Spokesperson for Agriculture contest Lesher, the daughter of a farmer is a native of Huntingdon County. She continues the fami ly Canning tradition; she and her husband farm in Berks County, operating Way-Har Farms arid dairy store. Lesher is a graduate of Penn State Univer sity with degrees in Agricultural Economics and Rural Sociology. Her tenure as a promo ter and educator trace back to the days when she was a county dairy princess and active 4-H’cr. Taking every opportunity to educate the public, Way-Har Farms hosts farm tours each year as a part of the Berks County Farm City Program. Guided tours on the farm gives the family the opportunity to visit with custom ers and the general public one on one. “Ques tions like, ‘Do you really work every day?” and ‘What do you do in between milkings?' are the most difficult to answer,” Lesher said. “The public has a very limited knowledge about the food they eat, and that is really scary. Their ignorance is preyed upon by those against production agriculture. All I ask for is equal time, to tell the truth about how and why we do what we do to the ani mals in our care.” Lesher has taken her passion for educating the public one step fuither. She has started SMASHING SUCCESS, a small communi cations and public relations agency servicing agricultural organizations and businesses. “Making you and your event a'smashing suc cess” is her slogan. Her work focuses on tell ing the public about agriculture and its importance in our lives. Lesher will compete for the national title in December at the national Young Farmer Institute in Louisville, Kentucky. The nation al winners will conduct media blitzes throughout the southeast, telling the story of production agriculture. This national recog nition has great appeal to Lesher, and she will be sharing her knowledge with everyone she meets along the way. @to@|it*s All in the CUSSnEDS
