BIS-Lancaster Fanning, Saturday, September 25, 1993 *Other Breed ’ Takes JOYCE BUPP York Co. Correspondent YORK (York Co.) Frankly, it may have been a first at the York Fair’s open class beef breed ing show. Frankly, the Jack Myers family of Dallastown was pleased about the decision. And, frankly, given the circum stances, “DVF Frankly He’s Good” seems a most appropriate name. “DVF Frankly He’s Good,” a homebred Red Angus from the Myers family’s Dunkard Valley Farms, was selected the supreme bull of the York Fair as a highlight of the open beef breeding classes. The selection of the powerful but stylish 17-month-old young bull for supreme honors’is probably the first-ever for a top win at the York Fair show by a Red Angus entry. Red Angus are so relatively rare at area shows in the East that they are generally categorized with other breeds. The York Fair marked the debut of “Frankly” into the show arena. In November, he will be exhibited in national Red Angus competi tion at the North American Lives tock Show in Louisville, Ky. “The Red Angus arc Dad’s,” said John Myers, son of Jack and Nancy Myers, who own and oper ate Dunkard Valley beef and crops farm. “His mother was ‘Frankly Red,’ a cow dad bought out West back in 1984 when he got some of the first Red Angus. “Dad thought Red Angus were pretty cattle,” Myers said. “He fig ured if he had to feed the cattle twice a day, he was going to have something that he enjoyed looking at.” For several years, the Myers crossed the rust-colored purebreds with Simmentals in their cow-calf operation. Their work with the Red Angus purebred bloodlines now includes embryo transfer work to more rapidly increase their herd genetic base.
