State 4-H Dairy Youth Compete VERNON ACHENBACH JR. Lancaster Farming Staff HARRISBURG (Dauphin Co.) More than 1,000 daily animals were exhibited Monday by state 4-H dairy youth in the Large Arena of the state Farm Show Complex in Harrisburg at the 38th annual Pennsylvania Junior Dairy Show. The heaviest numbers of animal entries were in the Holstein show with classes of up to 34 animals and in the Jersey show with several classes vying 18 to 20 animals. Judges for the day-long, three ring youth show were Paul King, of Moorefield, W.V., for the Hols tein show, Norman Hill, of Wood bine, Md„ for the Brown Swiss and Jersey breed shows; and Dr. Doug Evans, of Georgetown, N.Y., for Milking Shorthorn, Guernsey and Ayrshire breeds. In the Ayrshire breed, the junior champion and best bred and owned animal was a senior calf, Zil-Hil- Vue Reliable Moni, shown by Chan telle Zilhaver. of Cambridge Springs. The senior and grand champion was a senior 3-year-old, Barton Leigh BBK Marina, shown by Michele Kobosky of Warriors Mark. She also showed the reserve senior and reserve grand champ ion, 4-year-old Dahy-Ayr BBK v Mario, sired by Bonnie Brae Kellogg. In the Brown Swiss breed show, Richard Love, of Scottdale, showed his owned and bred Brown Swiss junior champion, a junior yearling, Love Haven Blend Lilly, sired by Trout Run Distinct Blend. The reserve junior champion was a summer yearling, Wind Mill Convincer Moonlight, toed and owned by Adam splittlcr, of Pine Grove. The sire was Arwis MGP Convincer. Though it didn’t set any records, the Eastern National Holstein Sale, held Wednesday evening at the Small Arena of the state Farm Show Complex resulted in a high price of $17,700 for a senior 2-year-old, Paulo-Bro LM Delite 4026-ET, consigned by New York breeder Indelibly Stamped Genetics. The three-hour iale totalled $271,750.16 on 76 full lots (there were several half lots) for an aver age of $3,575.66. Six animals brought prices of $7,000 or more. Nisly Genetics, based out of Patriot, Ohio, purchased the top selling Delite as the second animal offered during the sale. Delite was classified as a Very Good 85 and is projected to 27,568 pounds of milk. The first lot offered was an open junior 3-year-old, Tidy-Brook B- Star Suzy-ET, consigned by Mark and Alan Meyers, of Grccncastle. The Pennsylvania Holstein Asso ciation was the lop bidder, buying the VG-8S Blacks tar daughter for $15,000. Offered open for possi ble use as a donor dam, she was classified VG-85. Rothrock Golden Holsteins purchased a May calf, Adams-Dteam Oscar-ET, for $B,OOO, for the fourth highest selling animal. The calf was consigned by the partnership of Dave Rama (who also helped run the sale). Til. Williams, and Robert and Rose Adams, of Uniondale. The Pa. Holstein Association also purchased a May calf for $7,000 which was consigned by Plushanski Farms Inc, of Kutztown. The Exran co Thor daughter to a VG-88 Ned Boy dam has a full brother going to Japan. The other $7,000 sale was for a first choice heifer from four pregnancies due February between Ronnybrook Prcludc-ET and dam New- Life Melwood Halo-ET, a VG-87 national pro duction leader for milk and protein.
