Many of Pennsylvania’s more progressive swine breeders have consigned pens of four boars, each from one sire and one or two lit ters. Boars on test are from the Yorkshire, Duroc, Hampshire, and Landrace breeds. Weighing be tween 40 and 65 pounds on deliv ery, the boars are given a one- to two-week adjustment period de pending on their weight, weighed at least every two weeks, and taken off test when the pen weight Arena averages 230 pounds. Test measurements used to de termine index values include aver age daily gain, pen feed efficien cy, and backfat thickness and loin eye area, as determined by ultrasonic scan. The boars are also evaluated for structural and breed ing soundness by a committee of swine breeders and University swine specialists. The animals must meet minimum requirements for soundness and underline to be considered for die sale, which will feature approximately the top 75 percent, by index, of the sound boars. Berks County farmers will remove 1,708 acres from crop production to conservation uses, according to Richard Troutman, chairman of the,Berks County ASCS office. “The acreage reduction land makes up the total cropland removed from production under therl993 farm programs,” Trout man said. “Generally, this is eligi ble land that has been devoted to a small grain or row crop in one of the past five years.” By removing this acreage from crop production, a tremendous savings of soil and water resour ces will be realized.
