Page 6—Dairy of Distinction Supplement to Lancaster Farming, Saturday, July 31,1993 Jesse Howe, who operates a small (23-acre, none tillable) dairy In Ottsvll le, Bucks County, admits that he went to the entirely pasture-based dairy farm because it would have been “nearly Impossible," he said, to do other wise. “No doubt about It,” said Jesse, “grazing works.” With the climbing costs of securing equipment and livestock, after his graduation from Penn State with an agronomy degree in 1986, he chose to take up the grass based and seasonal grazing dairy farm because of the low cost. Jesse and wife Michelle, together with children Richard, 8 and Eveyln, 2, own 15 and lease an additional 15 Holstein cows (some registered, some grade) with several replacement stock, Holstein Dutch Belt. They milk from tie stall to pipeline with a herd average of 15,000 pounds. The Howes began farming about three years ago on a farm that Is about 100 years old.
