Adams Extension Meets GETTYSBURG (Adams Co.) —Plans for a satellite downlink, a report on the briefing for state legislators, and a review of the video, “The All American Apple” were main elements on the agenda when the board of directors, Adams County Cooperative Extension Association, met recen tly at the Penn State Extension Office. President Fred Kammerer presided at the meeting. David Benner complimented the extension staff for their con cise reports on the critical need for ongoing research to solve prob lems at a breakfast meeting for state legislators held at the county extension office. The meeting was attended by Representative Ste phen Maitland and his aide Sharon Price, by Representative Steven Nickol and by Charles Slrayer. Aide to Senator Terry Punt Dr. Charles Krueger, associate dean for research and Dr. Kenneth Hickey, scientist-in-charge at the Penn State Fruit Research Labor atory, Biglerville, also attended and directed follow-up program discussion and a tour at the laboratory. The Adams County Extension Office will become a satellite downlink site, capable of receiv ing educational programs from around the world. County Exten sion Director Thomas E. Piper repeated that the unit will be cost shared by Penn State’s College of Agricultural Sciences and could be installed as early as mid-July. Piper also announced that a 4-H Memorial Landscape Improve ment project has been initiated at the Adams County Services Building under direction of Mas ter Gardener Volunteer Laura Morgan and Robert McConkey. Funded by Frederick Rarig Memorial funds to Adams County 4-H Clubs, the initial planting includes one Kousa dogwood, two of the new hybrid dogwoods, two Serviceberry trees, me Littleleaf Linden, and several red twig dogwood. John Deere announced that Tricycler™ mulch ing attachments are available for more than 90 percent of its 30- through 60-inch mow- crs built in the last Id years. A 38-inch 3-blade mulching attachment is available to retroGt old er lawn and garden trac tors and a 38-inch com mercial walk-behind mower. A 46-inch at tachment will retrofit older tractors and older F 525 residential front mowers. Also, a 60-inch Tri cycler attachment is available for the new line of 400 Series trac tors, compact utility tractors, and F9OO Ser ies wide-area commer cial mowers, and as a re trofit option for older tractors and front mow ers. A Tricycler single blade walk-behind mower has been avail able since 1990, a kit has been in stock to make any John Deere silver walk-behind model a mulching mow er. In 1991, John Deere developed the variable plate mulching attach ment for riding mowers and tractors. The plate can be adjusted to mulch grass clippings or leaves. The same year, Deere broke the two-blade bar rier and provided a Tri cycler for 38-inch 2-blade decks. In 1992, Deere broke the 3-blade barrier with variable plate mulching systems for 48- and 54-inch mowers. For 1993, Deere developed the 44-inch rear-discharge mulching mower for LX 178 and GT242 trac tors.
