The Adams County Conserva tion District held its annual ban quet on March 18 at the York Springs Fire Company Communi ty Center. Nearly 120, ranging from farm ers and contractors to DER and SCS representatives, enjoyed a family style dinner and good com pany. District chairman John Lott served as master of ceremonies. The evening meal started with the invocation by district farm director Bill Oyler. Following the meal, Dr. Les Lanyon, Penn State professor of soil fertility, served as guest speaker. In his speech, “Why Nutrient Management Now?”, Lanyon ex plained why nutrient management has become such a high priority. This com is then shipped to a dairy farm in southern Pennsylva nia. He went on to explain that on ly a small percentage of the nutri ents from the imported com leave the farm in the form of milk. The rest become concentrated on the farm. To more vividly illustrate this point, Lanyon gave a brief history of the problems that have occurred in Lake Okeechobee, Fla. This re gion had problems similar to those we are seeing in the Chesapeake Bay watershed. Nutrient runoff from intense dairy operations were the cause of a 120 square mile algal bloom in the lake.
