GETTYSBURG (Adams Co.)
The Adams County Conserva
tion District held its annual ban
quet on March 18 at the York
Springs Fire Company Communi
ty Center.
Nearly 120, ranging from farm
ers and contractors to DER and
SCS representatives, enjoyed a
family style dinner and good com
pany. District chairman John Lott
served as master of ceremonies.
The evening meal started with
the invocation by district farm
director Bill Oyler. Following the
meal, Dr. Les Lanyon, Penn State
professor of soil fertility, served as
guest speaker.
In his speech, “Why Nutrient
Management Now?”, Lanyon ex
plained why nutrient management
has become such a high priority.
He illustrated this point most not
ably by distributing Hershey Kiss
es to the audience. “As you eat
that Hershey kiss . . . remember

Lanyon explained that the nutri
ents that are applied in the form of
fertilizers to fields in the com belt
are from a different time (10 - 15
million years ago) and a different
place (Florida, South America,
etc.). This com is then shipped to a
dairy farm in southern Pennsylva
nia. He went on to explain that on
ly a small percentage of the nutri
ents from the imported com leave
the farm in the form of milk. The
rest become concentrated on the
farm.
To more vividly illustrate this
point, Lanyon gave a brief history
of the problems that have occurred
in Lake Okeechobee, Fla. This re
gion had problems similar to those
we are seeing in the Chesapeake
Bay watershed. Nutrient runoff
from intense dairy operations
were the cause of a 120 square
mile algal bloom in the lake. Lan
