Of course, sufficient nitrogen sources must be supplied to the rumen microbes for optimum utilization of the carbohydrates. How can carbohydrates be less rumen-degradable? Years ago I conducted a research project which showed that shorter-length MARYLAND fiber decreased rumen degrad ability of fiber, and that steam flaking and extruder expanding in creased rumen degradation of car bohydrates. It has been known for some time (though more intuitively) that grinding grains, such as com, bar ley and oats, makes carbohydrates in the rumen more degradable. The degradability depends on the fineness of grinding.
