CJ. Houghtaling Tioga Co. Correspondent WHITNEYVILLE (Tioga Co.) Members of the Tioga County Holstein Club were saddened with the loss of fellow member and good friend Clark Bowen of Wellsboro. At the 1992 State Holstein Convention in Pitts burgh, the Pennsylvania Holstein Association had planned to pre sent Bowen with an award in rec ognition for his many years of dedicated service to the Associa tion’s Sales Program. Unfortu nately, Bowen was unable to attend. With Bowen’s death in August of 1992, the award was then slated to be presented to his son Glenn at the 1993 convention in Wilkes Barre. Unforeseen cir cumstances prevented Glenn from attending, so the award was brought back to Tioga County by District Representative Ron Wood of Mansfield who was at last able to present it to him at the Tioga County Holstein Club’s annual meeting at the Tioga County Fairgrounds. During the meeting, the club also recognized the recipients of another award presented in mem ory of Dick Chamberlain, a mem ber and fellow showman who died in 1991. The Dick Chamberlain Memorial Award, presented at the Northeast District Show, is given to the best bred cow still owned by the breeder, a class Chamberlain favored, displays the names of the owner and animal, the animal’s age and class and the year award was presented to the owner on attractive plates embellishing the four sides of the trophy. The first recipient was Gordon Wood, with 5 year old Gor-Wood D Jet Rona. 1992’s recipient was Olivia Court ney, with 4 year old Esbem Mark Corrihe Connie. Club President Tim Wood ack nowledged the Tioga County members who received All- Pennsylvania Awards at the con vention in Feb. Tioga County Holstein Club members with the top Breed Age Average are: Gordon and Dorothy Wood, 110.5%; L. Leroy and Ida Jane Plance, 109.7%; James Bow en, 108.3%; John Bennett, 108.0%; Glenn Bowen, 107.9%; and John and Judy Wheeler, 107.9%. Club member Leona Robson announced that at the Junior Hols tein Club Convention in Wilkes Barre Feb. 5-7, two Tioga County club members received Milk and Fat Awards. Olivia Courtney’s cow, Esbem Mark Corrine Connie took 1992 Jr. All-PA. Honorable Mention for four-year-old and Teresa Mcllwain’s cow, Cha-Do Ned Boy Cauen took fourth in the state in the Three-Year-Old Milk ing Division, with third in the state for protein. The cow milked 29,101 pounds with 1,045 in fat and 940 in protein. Robson also reported on the various activities that the county’s Jr. Holstein Club are involved in. As a fund raiser, the group sold 1920 pounds of Cheddar cheese, over 500 pounds more than the year before. The money from the sale has been earmarked for a clock which will be displayed in the Youth Center Building at the fairgrounds in memory of Dick Chamberlain. In addition, the club has made a contribution towards payment for a cow wash rack on the fairgrounds and club members are planning to attend the Royal Winter Fair in Canada in November. Election of new directors at the annual Tioga County Holstein Club meeting resulted in Paul Moyer of Liberty, Russell Tom linson of Stoney Fork (Wellsbor o), and Barry Hultz of Jackson Summit replacing outgoing direc tors Tim Wood, Bud Robson, and Kress Simpson, all of Mansfield. The Tioga County Holstein Club presented certificates of appreciation to several area busi ness men who provided generous donations to the organization in the past. On hand to receive the certificates were David Cornell of Cornell’s Agway, Middlebury Center; Harland Martin of Mar lin’s Dairy Service, Troy; Steve Lathrop of Mansfield Farm and Garden, Mansfield; and Lavem Warriner of Landmark Genetics, Homell, N.Y. Prior to the meeting, a banquet meal was provided by Gateway II caterers of Millerton.
