On that day the post offices all around the United States will be closed. So will most schools and banks be closed. We will honor the presidents of the United States, especially the two. great leaders who had their birthday in February. George Washington, our very first president, was bom on Febru ary 22, 1732. He died in 1799. He is often called the father of our country. Mr. Washington did great things during his life. You learn about some of them at school. Abraham Lincoln was the 16th United States president. His birth day was on February 12,1809 and he died in 1865. Mr. Lincoln is remembered as a great leader who set free the slaves in this nation. You see, a slave is a person who is owned by another person and must do everything that person says. Mr. Lincoln did not believe that slavery was the right way for human beings to be treated. We just got a new president. He is the 42nd president of the United Stales of America. You already know his name.
