Of the many activities at the 1993 Pennsylvania Farm Show, “Dairy Fun Night”, held Tuesday evening, offered hilarious activi ties from “cow pie” dodging to a milking and butter making contest that ended in a “butter fight.” The evening’s purpose of “fun with the dairy industry” reached planners’ goals. The Celebrity Cow Milking and Butter Making Contest resulted in unusual actions by area media celebrities. The contest began with a fight over the “perfect” cow to milk. Everything became progressively more competitive as media per sonalities resorted to ridiculous antics to get milk from their cows. Some massaged udders while others worked diligently to make their cows give milk. The Butter Making contest was a hard fought competition, that ended in a butter fight between several teams. The WHP-AM team, Rod Fritz and Melanie Apple, from Harrisburg, earned the first place prize from judges, while another Harrisburg team, WNNK-FM’s Bruce Bond and John Shaffer, won a close second placing. Other participating teams included: WGTY-FM, Gettys burg; WHP-TV, Harrisburg; WQLV-FM, Millersburg; and WWKL-FM, Harrisburg. Chris Fickes, WIMX-AM prog ram director, served as master of ceremony with Crystal Schweigh ofet, state dairy princess. Secret ary of Agriculture, Boyd E. Wolff, welcomed the crowd and prom ised an entertaining evening. The first event featured eight teams competing to chum the best flavor of ice cream. Each recipe was uniquely created by the teams, with all recipes made with “Real”- dairy products. A grandmother, Elsie Smith, and her grandchildren, all from Roearing Spring, worked to chum their “Hawaiian Delight” to the top prize, $3OO. The second place award, $l6O, was given to a “Strawberry” ice cream, created by John Hess, from Manheim. Harold and Linda Geise, Watson town, took the third place prize, $125, for their “Winter’s Delight.” Other entries were churned by: Chris and Brenda Davidsbn, Ship pensburg; Galen Kopp, Mount Joy; Benjamin Schriver, Jones town; Harry Thompson, Mount Joy; and Connie Troutman, Mohrsville. Three judges were Phil Keeney, Jr., from the Hershey Creamery, Company, Harrisburg, Daina Sav age, a reporter with the Lancaster Intelligencer Journal, and John Shaffer, Newscaster with WNNK FM, Harrisburg. The newest event for the even ing, the “Dairy Obstacle Contest,” generated plenty of action during (Turn to Page A 39)
