HARRISBURG The two story addition to the Farm Show Complex will be filled with draft horses and exhibits when the Pennsylvania Farm Show opens to the public on January 9. The long-awaited project adds 82,000 square feet of exhibit space to the Farm Show, which was al ready billed as the largest indoor agricultural exposition in the country. The first floor of the Northeast Building will be transformed into a horse bam, alleviating some crowded stalls in the two other livestock buildings, while provid ing greater safety for thousands of daily visitors. The farm and home exhibits will now be found in an exciting nevfc location on the second floor called the Family ’Comer. This will also be the lawn and garden center, with floriculture and horti culture exhibitors occupying the area. New events for this year are show-and-tell demonstrations, a baby animal learning center, an ice cream scooperbowl and an en vironmental center. Baby Animal Learning Cen ter This walk through exhibit of small farm animals gives chil dren a chance to leant about the animals and how to care for them. Demonstrations A variety of interesting show and tell pre sentations by the state’s agricul tural organizations will be held in the demonstration area on the sec ond floor of the Northeast Build ing. Thirty-five individual presen tations are scheduled to run from Sunday through Thursday, with subjects ranging from fish farming and emu farming to landscape de sign and wetland identification. Electronic Directories Seven electronic directories will now be found in convenient loca tions around the complex. Called interactive multimedia, this elec tronic version of the Farm Show schedule is based on a regular computer and touch screen moni tor. FFA Convention About 1,000 FFA members will con verge on the Farm Show Complex for their 64th mid-winter conven tion. For the first time in the his tory of the organization, vo-ag stu dents will meet in the Large Arena on Monday at 4 p.m. More than 200 members will be presented with Keystone Degrees for their involvement in supervised agri cultural projects during the past year. A few selected members will also receive the coveted State Star Awards for excellence in their fields. Displays highlighting prog rams in egg research, wood pro ducts and farm safety and health will comprise the Penn State Col lege of Agricultural Sciences exhibit at the 77th annual Pennsyl vania State Farm Show, January 9 to 14. “In these challenging times, it’s imperative that we effectively communicate our mission to those we serve,” said Dr. Lamartine Hood, dean of the college. “The Farm Show is a unique opportuni ty to showcase the diversity of our education, research and extension programs, which help improve the quality of life for all Pennsylvanians.” The Penn State exhibit will highlight the development of new egg products, such as egg concen trate, egg powder and frozen egg pellets. “By the year 2000, eggs in the shell could be obsolete,” said Dr. Joseph Mac Neil, professor of food science. Mac Neil said the new processing technologies could help eliminate shell break age and make eggs and egg pro ducts safer, healthier and more convenient. Scooperbowl Saturday For a $3 contribution to the Four Dia monds Fund at the Hershey Medi cal Center, Saturday afternoon visitors can enter the ice cream scooperbowl. Entrants can eat as much ice cream as they like from several vendors. This new event. Also featured will be research aimed at preventing salmonella contamination in egg processing. Visitors can see an operating egg washer, a video showing how egg shell cracks are detected and video-microscope footage of sal monella bacteria before and after disinfection. The wood products display will use videos, components and fin ished products to spotlight the state’s kitchen cabinet industry. ‘This industry annually uses about $220 million in raw materials to create SI .I billion worth of pro ducts,” said Dr. Paul Blanken horn, professor of wood technology. Pennsylvania is among the top three states for kitchen cabinet manufacturing, and leads the nation in hardwood timber vol ume. Penn State is involved in state-sponsored programs that benefit the forest products indus try, including the Ben Franklin Partnership, which promotes over all business development, and the Hardwood Initiative, which sup ports education, research and technical assistance for wood pro ducts manufacturers. PTO accidents occur when arms and legs, loose clothing or jewelry become entangled in the driveline, drawing the victim into the rapidly spinning mechanism.
