A 128-pound Suffolk leaped to the top of the market lamb competition at the Denver Fair on Thursday night. “Thomas is like a deer. He is always jumping the fence at home,” said IS-year-old Kendall Reiff, who showed the feisty lamb. “1 guess all that jumping deve loped the right muscling.” Several months ago, Thomas was extremely ill with a vims and lost a lot of weight “He was so skinny for a couple of months that I never thought he’d win. But I> nursed him back to health and he really took off.” Kendall said. ■ Kendall son of Sam and Elva Reiff of Ephrata, purchased his heavyweight market lamb from his uncle Leroy Reiff who is the father qf Lyndon and Lisa Reiff of Stras burg. His cousins win many of the sheep shows throughout the coun ty but did not compete in the Den ver show because they were show ing at Solanco Fair. Top showmanship honors went to Jeff Bollinger of Ephrata. His brother Keith received the reserve champ ion market lamb trophy for his Hampshire and Suffolk cross breed. The Bollingers are sons of Raymond and Sharon Bollinger. “I’ve been showing for five years, but it’s the first time that 1 won in showmanship,” a surprised Jeff said. “I attribute it to Betsy, a good tempered, tame Suffolk.” In the breeding division, Jessica Stoltzfus of Elizabethtown showed the supreme champion ram. Reserve supreme champion ram went to Nicole Knepp, who showed a Corriedale. Nicole, a 13-year-old from Mohnton, is the daughter of Dawn and Ted Knepp. “This was my first big win,” she said. “I like the Corriedale breed because they are versatile and have a good temper.” Supreme champion ewe award went to a Southdown owned by Leon Hunter of Fleetwood. The IS-year-old is the son of Leon and Pat Hunter. With his three sisters, Leon has a flock of 2S. His 17-year-old sister, Christine, was named reserve champion in the showmanship competition. Reserve supreme champion ewe went to a Hampshire owned by Raphael Peters. “It’s4he Erst time that I did this well,” said Raphael, who has been showing for 5 years. The 15-year old is the son of Raymond and Rebecca Peters of Middletown, where they own a flock of 14 breeding and market sheep.
