A36-Lancaster Farming, Saturday, September 21, 1991 Eshelman Repeats As Reading Sheep Grand Champion ANDY ANDREWS Lancaster Farming Staff READING (Boles Co.) This is how champion names are made: On the morning of September 16 at the Reading Fairgrounds, Bruce Snyder, Kutztown, acciden tally rips the ear tag off of his Dorset ram lamb, leaving a little hole in the ear cartilage. He nick names the lamb “Hole.” And Hole becomes grand champion ram at the show. In the spring of 1990, Amy Eshelman, 17, Sinking Spring, attends the Oxford National Sale in Springfield, Illinois. She purch ases a lamb, which she later nick names “Gretchen,” and not only does the Oxford ewe win grand champion ewe as a lamb at the 1990 Reading Fair, it wins grand champion the next year as a yearling. The champion show despite record-breaking heat and humidi ty, sweating exhibitors and restless sheep was one of the largest in the fair’s history, with 25 exhibi tors and more than twice as many sheep. But for the champion breed show, the decision was “even clos er with the ewes than with the rams,” said Rodney Gilbert, judge for the show. The “outstanding females” in the ring will all become productive females, according to Gilbert Choosing the champion ram is an “unfun job,” he said. It becomes difficult to decide, because it depends on what the animal will be used for, as a sire source, wool source, or as dual-purpose. Most of the rams in the grand champion show were lambs, but all “are pow- Repeat champion at the Reading Fair on Monday was Amy Eshelman, right, who won grand champion ewe with her Oxford yearling ewe, “Gretchen.” The ewe won grand champion last year at the fair as a lamb. Kelly Glaser swept the top plac ings in the Cotricdale class, win ning champion and reserve ewe. Amy Oxford won every first place in the Oxford class. The Anspach family won every placing in the Hampshire class, and Megan Perry won nearly every placing in the Shropshire class. Maintaining control of the sheep is essential to keeping the animals “from darting off like a rocket,” said Rodney in the fitting and showmanship contest. Many of the sheep at Reading have been accus tomed to fair shows, but Rodney cautioned the showmen to hold the sheep under the chin and on top. Fitting champion Amy Eshel man kept the “face really tight ened, and the sheep exhibits a real ly tight body with high quality fleece,” said Rodney. Eshelman also won grand champion market lamb. Show experience often leads to a championship, as it did for champion showman Joyce Hef fner, who won the senior champ ion for age 15 and over. Following is a list of show placings. A public hearing was also held on May 23, 1991. The reproposal was also published in the “Pennsylvania Bulletin,” the “Maryland Regis ter,” and the “New York Register.” Since republication, it has become apparent to the commis sion from comments, phone inquiries, and meetings with inter ested parties that further discus sion of the fee schedule proposal is needed so that all points of view can be aired and all questions answered.
