August 31, 1991-A2 Mostoller Steer Named Champion At Somerset GAY N. BROWNLEE Somerset Co. Correspondent MEYERSDALE (Somerset Co.) Above 70 market steers were exhibited during the Market Steer Show at the county fair grounds here. Greta Mostoller, 18 of Boswell, competing for the final time, saw her 1,265 pound Maine Cross steer named the Grand Champion. It was the big “Number 3” for Mostoller who repeated her victory from the years 1986 and 1989, and found happy tears cascading down her cheeks. Mostoller declares that selling her steer at the Junior Livestock Sale will be an emotional time. She says she has formed a very special attachment to “Dillon,” who seems to reciprocate the affection. She will enter the Conemaugh Valley Memorial Hospital School of Nursing this fall. With her sis ter, Rachael, the girls have also started a business of selling club calves and lambs, despite Rachael’s attendance at the Uni versity of West Virginia where her junior year is fully covered by the scholarship she won for outstand ing judging. Their parents are Butch and Peg Mostoller to whom Greta gives much credit for her support in 4-H projects these last nine years. “I think that’s why we’ve go so farm in 4-H,” she says, “because the family unit is so close.” Kevin Stahl, son of Robert and Doris, Stahl of Somerset, had the reserve grand champion steer. It ONTHE GROW was the third reserve grand champion for Stahl, he said. (Well, that must be an extremely frustrating position to hold). His Chianina Cross steer weighed 1,275 pounds. He has one brother whose name is Kermit. The grand champion county bred steer was owned by Tracy Bittner of Meyersdale. Taking reserve champion in the county bred category was Danny Miller of Meyersdale. Greg McKean was the Type judge. He is the Mercer County Livestock Breeder. Mary Shick was the judge of Showmanship. She is the Washington County Extension Livestock Agent. Following is a list of top winners: Clan 1 1 Natalie Welch, 2 Lonny Mur ray, 3 Tammy Frazier Clan 2. 1.
