El 1 1 HAPPENINGS Boots & Saddles 4-H The June meeting of the Boots & Saddles 4-H Club was called to order by President Eileen Holm, and the pledges were given by Barry Gochnauer and Daniel Talbot. Missy Overbaugh gave the sec retary report, and the treasurer’s report was given by Becky Preiss. Under old business, the mem bers were pleased to hear that the club won the “Monogramed Cool er,” given by F. & M. Brown & Sons, for the most members of a club participating in 4-H Days on June I. New business held many important upcoming dates: July 6 is the County Fun Show at the Lower Hopewell Horse Center, Lititz. July 9 is County Demon stration Day at the Farm & Home Center, Lancaster. Most important July 20, County Roundup, at the Lower Hopewell Horse Center, Lititz. This is the first step to mak ing it to the state horse show in October. Members were told about diffe rent upcoming shows and fairs, and were also given entry forms. After the meeting there was a fitting and showmanship demon stration given by Donnie Sheiss, a former Franklin County 4-H member. Sheiss showed the mem bers how to show a steer and also how to clip and fit a steer to make him look the best for show. The next meeting will be a club picnic, which will be held at the West Pennsboro Fire Hall in Plainfield on July 14. The other movie was called “Farm to Fabr ic,” showed how the wool is shorn. The Spring Preview Show was held June 1,1991 at the Shippens burg Fairgrounds. Members weighed their lambs in at the show or at Weibly’s Farm Market. Lycoming Co. 4-H Presentation Night On Thursday, June 13, the annual 4-H Presentation Night was held at Leader North in Williamsport. 4-H members who participated included Melanie Eck, RR4, Nis bet; Erin Boring, RR 3 Williams port; Matthew Dunkleberger, RR 5, Williamsport; Marc and Mick Stine, RR 1, Trout Run; Leo and Christie DeMorat, RRI Trout Run; Bill Klees, RR 3, Montours ville; and Angela Lovell, RR 2, Linden. Topic of speeches included Pat tern Me Pretty, Piece Together a Pizza, Road Rash Remedies, and the Rules and Safety of Air Pistol. E 66678 m ?*^SSwSS2T South Mountain 4-H Club The South Mountain 4-H Club held its monthly meeting recently at the Fontana Community Building. A presentation was given by Chad Forst, Michael Robertson, Jason Flowers, Isaac Ebersole, and Tom Frey on model rockets. They showed us what you need to make a rocket, how to launch a rocket, and the many different kind of rockets there are. Also a demonstration on stamps was given. Michelle Struphar, Erin Frey, Isaac Ebersole, Jessie Wanger and Tom Frey told us how to remove a stamp, place it in your book and the many different places that you can collect stamps. Kelly Helpers 4-H On May 20, the Kelly Helpers 4-H Club held their monthly meet ing. The meeting started at 7 p.m. Under old business, the club discussed the cookie sale and under new business discussed the teen council picnic and set a date to visit the capitol in Harrisburg. After that we judged projects and held committee meetings. Cumberland County 4-H Goat Club The Cumberland County 4-H Goat Club met on June 5, 1991 at The York County 4-H Livestock clubs recently held their annual 4-H meats judging and identification contest on June 19 at Godfrey Bros. Meals near Loganville. The contest was attended by 4-H members from Adams, Lan caster, and York counties, competing for top honors. The junior division of the contest was dominated by Cindy Dehoff of Glen Rock. Cindy placed first in the meats identification portion of the contest and also col lected the High Junior Individual Overall plaque during the contest. Other juniors placing in the meat identifica tion were Mark Wessel, Adams County, who placed sec ond and Buffy Dehoff, Glenn Rock, who placed third. In the overall junior competition, Amy Bollinger fol lowed Cindy Dehoff in second, while Mark Wessel was third. In the senior division of competition, Cindy Dehoff’s older sister Lisa dominated the division by placing first m the meat identification, oral reasons, and by receiving the high senior overall honors. The other 4-H’ers placing in the top five in meat identi fication were Matt Sellers from Thomasville in second and Jason Stein of Wrightsville in third. In the oral reasons competition. Matt Sellers placed second, Barb Mummert of Seven Valleys placed third, Jason Stein placed fourth, and Tracy Bollinger of Lancas ter County picked up fifth place. The overall contest plac ings saw Matt Sellers in second and Jason Stein in third. Other seniors competing and doing well in the contest were Tim Craig and Angie Erb from Lancaster County and also Tracy Lobaugh, Megan Wcssel, and Arlyn Mey ers, all from Adams County. Mary Beth Stahl, New Oxford; Ashi Day, Lit tlestown; and April Weigand, East Berlin pre sented prepared speeches. They competed in the junior area of the prepared speech division at the Adams County 4-H Presentation Night. They will go on to regional competition on July 16. Lancaster Farming, Saturday, July 6, 1991-825 7 p.m. at the home of Justin and Derrick Carpenter. There were 11 members pre sent Entry blanks were given to each member for the upcoming Shippensburg and Carlisle fairs. A talk was given by Robert Leib on “Fitting a Meat Goat.” Red Allen reminded members to get their buyer’s letters in the mail for the meat goat sale at Shippens burg Fair. Demonstrations were also given by Derrick Carpenter on “Record Keeping on the Compu ter” and Justin Carpenter on “Tatoomg.” The next meeting will be held at Billy Leib’s on Sunday, July 7 at 4 p.m. This will be a covered dish picnic.
