Joel Hastings, editor of “Holstein World,” was the keynote speaker at the Breeders Majority meeting at the National Holstein Convention. Robert Casey to thwart a bur geoning state deficit by increasing taxes on all tobacco products. The proposal would raise the tax on a pack of cigarettes from 18 cents to 48 cents. On Tuesday, 43 tobacco growers most of whom are members of religious sects which normally avoid political involvement spent several hours in the Capital building meet ing with senators and representa tives to discuss Casey’s proposed tobacco tax and state budget options. The growers, mainly from the west central portion of Lancaster County, met initially with tobacco industry lobbyists George Wolff and William Cornell Jr. The two lobbyists talked to the group about the importance of organizing and making themselves be heard. Immediately after the introduc tion of Wolff and Cornell to the representatives of the PTGA, the group had a chance to talk with four state senators and seven rep resentatives, lead by Sen.
