It was a first-time event, but hailed as a big success owing to the 72 entries in the Somerset County Market Lamb Jackpot Show, held recently at the fair grounds here. Young people came from at least five Pennsylvania counties and from several states. Event coordinators, who had managed to raise $1,500 in spon sorship support, said they are eager to see youngsters start learn ing how to show animals at an ear ly age. Some were only three years old who brought lambs into the showing. Regardless of their performance or age, each particip ant received a small trophy or ban ner. Performing the judging honors was John Conaway, Newville, who owns Pine Haven Farm (with ISO acres of Christmas trees) and pi . gi Waynesburg, Greene County. He showed a Suffolk lamb which was pur chased from Ben and Mary Bow of Annville. Campbell claimed a purse of $l5O for making the 8-hour round trip to Meyersdale. Earning $75 for his reserve grand champion, a Hampshire, was Josh Cowell, Waynesburg, Greene County. Cowell said his sheep was purchased from Don Witt Club Lambs, Champion. Tegan Hayes, 14, of Somerset took the title of senior master she pherd with her Suffolk lamb, while Jarod Hoover, 13, of Rock wood was named junior master shepherd. With the other entries in this category, Hayes and Hoover had to take the multiple choice written portion, judge lambs in a pen, and do the grooming and handling. For winning, they each received a plaque and an engraved shepherd’s crook.
