UNIVERSITY PARK (Centre Co.) —ln the 1980 s, numerous Pennsylvania farms and agribu sinesses failed. ‘The majority of farms and businesses that fail do so because of bad marketing and financial management,” said Dr. James Beierlein, associate professor of agricultural economics in Penn State’s College of Agriculture. “It’s no longer adequate for agri culturists to be skilled only at pro duction management. Agriculture must become more business oriented if it is to remain a way of life.” Beierlein and Dr. William McSweeny, assistant professor of agricultural economics, have developed a new educational prog ram to help farmers and agribusi ness managers improve their pro fits through better business management. “Enhancing the Profitability of REAL HEAVY DUTY SHREDDER. The program also can help farm and agribusiness managers deal with future challenges. “We’re moving toward a free market eco nomy in agriculture, with less reliance on government prog rams,” said Beierlein. “Producers will face increasing price competi tion and thinner profit margins in the years ahead.” He adds that because the agri cultural economy is so uncertain, both public and private lending West Clifford, PA Carlisle, PA agencies now demand that produc ers and agribusiness owners do more business, financial, and marketing planning. “Farm and agribusiness mana gers who want to be considered for credit need to keep up-to-date balance sheets, income statements, and cash flow projections in order to demonstrate the financial per formance of their operations,” said Beierlein. “We hope to help them work toward this goal.” McSweeny and Beierlein will present these programs to any agri- The 2440 QT Front End Loader from Bush Hog' does an outstanding job with general contracting and landscape chores —but it works just as well when cleaning feed lots, lifting grain or for snow removal Designed for 30 to 60 HP tractors, the 2440 QT allows a choice of 48, 60, 72 or 80-inch buckets as well as fork lifts and bale spears.
