Talk about inconsistency on the second day a new hog receiving station opened, farmers consigned about 126 hogs for sale. And then on a Monday two months later, 1,026 hogs were consigned. But for Ezra H. Good, a Hatfield hog marketer (who also contracts hogs for Gehman Feed Mill), the new 9,860 square foot facility will provide Hatfield Quality Meats, Hatfield, Pa., with more of a con sistent number of hogs from this area. The new facility was con structed by Agri, Inc., Farmersvil le. Pa., and finished last Septem- Ezra H. Good operates Good Farms Receiving Station. This nearly 10,000 square foot facility was completed in September last year and can house about 800 hogs. Good, Inc. and Hatfield Quality Meats built. Because of the grear number of hog fanners in the Ephrata/New Holland area (about a 20 to 30 mile radius) of the coun ty, the facility is close by and offers an alternative to farmers who had to travel to some of the more distant markets. “Lancaster County is one of the largest areas as far as hog populations,” said Good. In 1972, the com pany asked Ezra to be a buyer, and he’s been buying hogs on the open market for them ever since. “My dad was a livestock man, an order/ buyer for different farmers,” he said. “He always had a livestock truck. By the time I was 16, I hauled livestock to the local mark ets for the farmers. So I grew up in the livestock industry.” He then went to work raising feeder hogs for Gehman Feed Mill. He furnished their feeder pigs and marketed their fat hogs on the con fr & Good ber Kenton Good, right, with brother Kurils show the special ly angled hog pens that help direct hogs as they are shuffled from the docks Into holding pens. The hog must be lean and heavily muscled, ideal ly between 210 and 260 pounds at consignment. “The hog should be a good meat quality type carcass, a good, muscular hog. By looking at a hog, I can determine if a hog’s going to yield well or poor.” Good said, “As Hatfield grew, they started coming out to Lancas ter County to purchase hogs back in the early ’7os. Back then they were killing 400 hogs a day. Today they’re killing almost 6,000 hogs a day.” Represents Hatfield Farm show and fair participants probably recognize Good, since he represents Hatfield at various county shows. His sons Kurds, 17, and Kenton, 18, also show at the various community and slate fairs. “I don’t get to all of them, but
