The Pork Quality Assurance Program is the industry’s manage ment education program designed to reduce (hug residues. Currently, more than 3,300 producers from 46 states are participating in Levels I and II of the voluntary program. Level 111 involves a three-step verification process to aid a pro ducer in checking his facilities, his dogs and his own knowledge to find and eliminate possible sour ces of residues. Once a producer completes the checks, he selects an ag professional to review the checklists and verify quality man agement. Besides providing the check lists to help identify possible sour ces of residues, Level 111 includes other special features. Optional computer software makes it easy to keep accurate drug use records and aids in the selection and prop er use of medications for specific disease problems. “Level 111 may take some time by the producer, but this may be our last chance at a voluntary, producer-designed program,” according to NPPC Vice President Tim Rose, a producer from Lyons, KS, who is co-chairman of the Pork Quality Assurance Commit tee. “The alternative of a govern ment mandated and designed program makes me very nervous.” Pork Quality Assurance Pro gram material can be obtained by contacting state or national poik producer organizations. need for belts and chains.
