Balfany of Salisbury, Md., DPl’s first vice president, told the audi ence, “We started the fund drive with the theme 'working together means winning together’ and we’ve certainly done that.” DPI, the non-profit trade asso ciation working for the continued progress of Delmarva’s more than one billion dollar-a-year poultry industry, conducts the fund drive to raise money for its extensive programs and services. DPl’s membership consists of poultry growers, allied industry suppliers of products and services, poultry company employees, Delmarva’s eight poultry compa nies, and hundreds of non-poultry businesses on Delmarva which recognize the importance of the industry to them. In all, there are more than 4,000 DPI members. Delmarva’s Distinguished Citi zen Award was presented to Paul E. Ferrier of Salisbury, Md., presi dent of G&M Sales of Delmarva Inc., a poultry equipment supply company. This award is given in recognition of the winner’s contri butions to DPI, the poultry indus try and the community. Ferrier has served on the DPI Board of Directors 18 years and was DPI president in 1985. He is chairman of DPl’s Lower Mary land Fund Drive campaign and, over the years, has been a willing volunteer for many DPI projects. The recipients are Dr. Dennis Murphy, extension poultry spe cialist with the University of Maryland, and Mr. Daniel H. Pal mer, extension poultry specialist with the University of Delaware. Both men were cited for their contributions to research and edu cation on a dead bird composting system which has gained national notoriety. In addition, they serve on several DPI committees and willingly work with DPI and others in the poultry industry. Dr. Murphy joined the Univer sity of Maryland staff in 1984 as an associate professor in the Department of Poultry Science after working on nutrition matters with companies in North Carolina and Arizona. Mr. Palmer has been Dela ware’s extension poultry special ist since 1985. Previously, he worked as a poultry grower and flock supervisor, as well as instructor and research associate for the University of Delaware. Another highlight of the ban quet was the announcement of Delmarva’s outstanding poultry growers. They were selected by their grow-out companies and pre sented silver bowls by DPI Presi- dent Harry J. Mitchell and Grower Committee Chairman D.
