    MADISON, Wis.— The board
of directors of Livestock Conser
vation Institute (LCI) approved
several resolutions at the LCI
annual meeting held April 3-5,
1990, in Louisville, KY.
The Board recommended that
LCI establish itself as a coordinat
ing point for the animal product
industry, to exchange information
on food safety issues, and generate
understanding of challenges each
group in the chain faces, in an
effort to generate appropriate
responses to food safety assurance
issues. In addition, that LCI devel
op and promote educational pro
grams for implementation of qual
ity assurance for the animal pro
duct industry.
Other actions taken by the
board included: I) Encouraging
formal dialogue between APHIS
and the National Park Service
regarding brucellosis in wild elk
and bison in Yellowstone National
Park; 2) Supporting the rapid
completion plan for brucellosis
eradication and that when funds
become available they are directed
to appropriate program areas; 3)
Recommending both the approval
of differential pseudorabies diag
nostic tests as official disease

porting a framework for the deve
lopment of scrapie control pro
grams and organizing an LCI
“Sheep Group” as a new commit
tee; 9) Organizing a “mystery
swine disease” committee: 10)
Supporting the proper use and
storage of medications by veter
inarians and producers: 11) Sup
porting the funding and research
of the pathogenesis, management,
control, and the development of
official, accurate diagnostic tests

eliminate this disease from our
hemisphere; 16) Urging APHIS
and USDA to take whatever
actions are needed quickly, to
make the latest technology on
acaricides available so the pilot
project regarding bont tick eradi
cation on Antigua can be started;
and 17) Recommending that
USDA closely monitor the situa
tion in Mexico and provide assis
tance to control hog cholera and to
assure reliable mechanisms to pre
vent outbreaks of the disease in
this country.
