C4-Lancasier Fanning, Saturday, January 13,1990 HARRISBURG (Dauphin Co.) With a score of 99.5 points out of a possible 100, a dozen eggs from Sauder’s Eggs in Lititz may have set Pennsylvania Farm Show history. Ray Kennerknecht, the Penn State Extension poultry specialist who chairs the Farm Show’s egg competition, said the 99.5 score is probably the highest ever recorded at Pennsylvania’s premiere farm event, but nobody he knows has the records to prove it. Kennerknecht said the Sauder’s entry won the breakout competi tion, which he labeled a tough class. Eggs are judged first on shell thickness and color. They are weighed. The albumen height is measured. The dozen eggs in the contest are examined for the prop er shape and color, and for uniformity. Paul Sauder, president of Saud er’s Eggs, said his company entered 14 different classes this year, picking up 10 first place rib bons and four second place awards. In addition to winning the breakout contest, a company entry also took honors for the best dozen white eggs. Secretary of Agriculture Boyd Wolff presented Richard Stoner of Greencastle, Franklin County, with a prestigious conservation award during the Pennsylvania Farm Show Monday night. Stoner represented Pennsylvania in the 1989 National Endowment for Soil and Water Conservation Fanner Awards. Stoner and his wife, Lana, raise about 400 feeder pigs and 120 sows, and produce small grains and hay on their 115-acre farm. Stoner began applying con servation practices like agricultur al waste management, crop rota tions, contour strips and drainage on his farm shortly after he pur chased it in 1973. “I practice conservation farm ing because I believe each person should be a good steward of what has been entrusted in his care,” Stoner said. “I believe each farm should be utilized to its potential.” Stoner is no stranger to con servation awards. He was named the state’s top conservation farmer in 1988 by the Pennsylvania Asso ciation of Conservation Districts and the county’s conservation farmer of the year in 1987 by the Franklin County Conservation District. The National Endowment for Soil and Water Conservation Award Program, now in its se venth year, recognizes selected farmers and ranchers for their con servation achievements. Ten fin alists will be selected from the crop of state winners, and three of them will receive national recog nition in December. The program is sponsored by the National En dowment for Soil and Water Con servation and is funded by the Du pont Company.
