Sometimes we parents must be tough.” The Garber’s safety efforts were heralded as the best in a contest sponsored by “Successful Farm ing” magazine and “Just Kids,” a national farm safety program for children. Weiss Joins National Dairy Board ARLINGTON, VA. Richard mouth College with his M.B.A. B. Weiss has been named as and A.B Senior Vice President of Public Relations for the National Dairy Board. He joined the staff on August 21, 1989 Weiss’s responsibilities will include anticipating and managing public issues with potential for affecting dairy consumption, ini tiating public relations campaigns that will positively position milk and dairy foods and keeping the dairy industry leaders informed of NDB plans, activities and results. A 20-year veteran of the mark eting and public relations indus try, Weiss came to the Board from the National Paint and'Coatings Association where he was Direc tor of Public Relations and Man agement Information. Previously, he was Director of Marketing for Hollister, Inc. in Chicago, Illinois. Weiss has also held positions with the Keebler Company, Elm hurst, 111., Abbott Laboratories International, North Chicago, 111. and the Alberto-Culver Company, Melrose Park, 111. and San Juan, Puerto Rico. He began his career with the Curity Division of the Kendall Company, Chicago. Two years ago her 11-year-old son suffocated in a gravity-flow wagon filled with com. During the ceremony, Adams, who is from lowa, said that Swe den and Finland do not have the tractor fatalities that the U.S. have since they have mandatory tractor roll over. She quoted statistics that the tractor is the number one killer on the farm and that one in four children’s injuries on the farm are preventable. “Canada doesn’t have that prob lem,” she said, “because teachers are given a 300-page manual on farm safety, which is taught to students.” Adams through her farm safety program developed videos, color ing books, newsletters and other items to promote safety. She is apalled that so many parents do not practive safety mea sures on the farm. She related an incident that she had heard about this week. A cow had fallen in a manure pit The dad threw boards out and told his 16-year-old son to walk on the boards to save the cow. “We are not thinking,” Adams cried. “Don’t take the risk with our kids. God gave them to us. He said, “Their simple, inexpensive mea sures can prevent most of the seri ous agricultural accidents involv ing young Americans.” What can one person do to change the statistics? Senator Noah Wenger said the Garber fam ily proved that one family can do a lot “You brought honor to your farm, yourself, your county, your state and the nation.” In an effort to make the agricul ture community more safety con scious President Bush proclaimed September 17 to 23 National Farm Safety Week. MO SPREADER resentativc John Barley, Lancaster County Commissioner Chairman Jim Huber, and Steve Crawford for the Secretary of Agriculture. The Garbers live on an 185-acre dairy farm in Pequea Township. They hold monthly meetings with their children, employees, and their families to keep up to date on safety practices. Jay Irwin, county extension ser vice agent, noted that since 1984, 17 farming fatalities have hap pened in Lancaster County. Six happened to children between the ages of 1 and five. The county has a higher percentage of farm acci dents than any other state. Jim Huber, county commission er, said that the county’s agricul tural industry is a source of strength and pride.
