Hftfifng Sal Di FRANKLIN (Venango) A simmental steer, selected for grand championship honors at the Ven ango County Fair, brought distinc tion to its young 4-H owner, Joshu a Smith, and it also set a fair record at the livestock sale held in Philips Arena. With lively bidding the 1,314-pound steer commanded $5 a pound from Hoss’s Steak and Sea House, for a grand total of $6,570. The previous fair record for a steer was $3.30, showing a handsome $1.70 increase in the top price. The reserve grand champion steer was a simmental/angus cross weighing 1,210 pounds, owned by Jeff Etzel. Farrell Golden Dawn made the top bid of $2.40 a pound. George McQuiston owned the right, sold to Farrell Golden Dawn for $3.01 per pound. April McQuiston, owner of the reserve champion 114-pound lamb, sold it to Oil City Agway for $4.25 a pound. The top pairs of lambs from the fair also were auctioned. Jessica Deets’ grand champion pair weighed 209 pounds and went to D.J. Cheresnowski of Ski’s Mark et, Clintonville, for $3 a pound. The reserve champion pair, weigh ing 220 pounds and owned by Chad Reitz, was bought by Pennsy Auto Parts for $2.50 a pound. Cory Yurkanin’s top hog, weighing 240 pounds, went to Far rell Golden Dawn for $3.01 a ber 17 at 12:30. The sale, held at the York County Fairgrounds, fea tures all swine breeds. Sellers Hog Buying Station of Greencastle, presented Kevin Martin of Smithsburg, Maryland a unique birthday present when they purchased his grand champion hog for $4.10 per pound at the sale of champions of the Washington County Ag Expo. For Kevin, this was both a happy as well as sad 19th birthday. It marks the end of his very successful hog showing career in 4-H. On the night before the sale, Kevin had once again captured the grand champion fitting and show ing trophy. This was the tenth lime Kevin won grand champion fitting and showing in the Swine Show. Kevin has been undefeated since his last year as a junior 4-H member. When asked how he goes about selecting a hog for fitting and showing, he said, “I like to pick one that is easy to handle and that will clean up good. Most of the pigs I have shown were farrowed on our farm, but this year, I picked Hamp pig that was purchased at the Grccncastle Feeder Pig sale.” During his 4-H career, Kevin has been in the winner’s circle more often than not and wishes to thank the many businesses that have made his hog showing days happy as well as profitable. et lamb at the Venango County Fair to Farrell Golden Dawn.
