A32-Lancaster Farming, Saturday, May 28, 1988 fhm Philosophy Newton Bair “THAT’S THE WAY WE ALWAYS DID IT!” A New Idea. It has to strike just right, or I won’t buy it. Good or bad, here’s how the reasoning pro cess works. “If the idea wasn’t mine, it must have been cooked up by someone else. I don’t know Who thought of it or why, so it probably won’t affect me.” “Let someone else try it first. If it works for them, I’ll consider it. If it doesn’t work. I’ll snicker. After all, I’m not a guinea pig.” “Somebody tried the same idea over in Schmucksville, and it didn’t work. So it probably won’t work here either.” “New ideas mean change. It always costs money to make a change, so count me out. I’m hap py with things just as they are.” “Let the other fellow invest in something new. If it looks like he is making lots of money, then I’ll take another look at it.” “I like my own ideas best. They’re always sound, and because I thought of them, they’re sure to work.” (I have to admit ITS GOT MORE PIC Kubota maki out of a hole e! tractor/loader, There are ranging from, power. I’ll make them wait for the next payment on my loan. I might even go to another Bank.” “If the idea comes from Harris burg it must be bad, and if it comes from Washington, oy-yoy! It’s even worse! I’ll have nothing to do with it!” (Maybe). “If I think nobody is watching, I might sneak a try.” Now. on the other hand, when my neighbors start talking about how good the idea is. I’ll open my ears. (Unless it happens to be my friend who thinks Republican, talks Democrat, and then doesn’t even vote!) Now, not all new ideas arc really new. Some arc just an old idea that has been re-bom with a new twist. Or maybe it required a longer ges tation period before birth. Some ideas are so weak at birth that they mKUBoin Nothing like it on earth" must be coddled, pampered, fed and nurtured for a long time, before anyone takes them serious ly. Then they must be kneaded, stretched, frozen, thawed, beaten and superheated in the oven of controversy until they’re ready to use. Otherwise, they’re only “Half-baked” ideas. There are so many new ideas aborning these days that no single mind can absorb them all. Among the multitude of wild and wooly ones, there is an occasional gem. Like all gems, an idea must be cut and polished. If it has real merit the lustre will be irresistible. If it is flawed, in time the cracks will destroy it. By now you have noticed that I haven’t given you a SINGLE NEW IDEA. However, you can pick up lots of them in the Farm Press, the PTA or Extension meet ing, or even at Church. You might even have a few of your own. Regardless of where they come from, they will be juggled and jelled and sorted out by the Human Reasoning Process. A bad idea might thrive a long time before all the cracks show up, but sooner or later it finds the scrap heap. >me in and at a •actor/ /backhoe pick up-and- go- 4.5% financing available or rebate PROGRAM! USDA To Survey Pennsylvania Farmers ALLENTOWN (Lehigh) Pennsylvania farmers will be asked to participate in a nation wide survey conducted by the U.S. Department of Agriculture in early June, according to the Pennsylva nia Agricultural Statistics Service (PASS). W.C. Evans, chief statistician for PASS, said that information gleaned from the survey will be used to estimate 1988 crop acreages and mid-year livestock inventories. PASS is operated jointly by USDA and the Pennsyl vania Department of Agriculture. USDA’s Agricultural Statistics Board will release national and slate reports based on the informa tion in late June and early July. “WHY, THAT’S THE WAY WE ALWAYS WANTED TO DO IT ANYWAY!” Or, “I TOLD YOU SO!” Or “NOW. WHY DIDN’T I THINK OF THAT?” 1 guess that’s why we’re Human. Evans noted that farmer cooper ation is necessary to provide reli able crop and livestock information. “Results of this survey will pro vide farmers, agribusiness, policy makers and other users of agricul tural data with the information vit al for planning and decision mak ing,” Evans said. All information concerning individuals is confidential and will be used only in developing the state and national estimates, he emphasized. Additional information con cerning the survey is available by calling PASS headquarters, 717-787-3904, or the State Depart ment of Agriculture’s toll-free number, 1-800-AG-PENNA.
