A22-Lancaster Farming, Saturday, October 3, 1987 Wednesday, September 16, proved to be a delightful day for Somerset County Dairy farmers to take a tour to visit five of Chester County’s fine registered Holstein farms. Nearly 40 excellent cows were seen sired by the breed’s best sires. Farms visited were Melvin Stoltzfus, Cochranville 40 cow herd with a BAA of 105.5, the roll- Lycoming Co. Farmers Support “Vote Yes” Assn. JERSEY SHORE “Everyone in the commonwealth should vote “YES” in support of the referen dum to save farmland”, said Edward P. Snook, President of the Lycoming County Farmers’ Association. Snook was referring to the referendum question which will appear on the November 3rd ballot which will call for a one-time $ 100 million bond issue to fund a purch ase of development rights program in Pennsylvania. “When farmland disappears, the price of food just goes up, because of transportation costs, and quality normally suffers. “Agriculture generates more than $35 billion worth of business in the state.Jt’s our number one industry,” Snook added. This herd has an average of 19,500 milk and 750 lbs. fat. Dunwood Farms, owned by Alvin Stoltzfus, Oxford, 60 cow herd has a RHA of 21,059 milk, 3.9% fat, 814 lbs. fat with a BAA 105.9 includes 7 excellent cows. Many daughters of the Golden family were seen here which will be dispersed in March. Joy-Wil Farms owned by Wil mer and Barry Hostetler proved to be an interesting stop for seeing 12 excellent cows with a RHA of 20,500 milk, 3.7% 758 fat. Last stop was Glenn Freese’s Glee-Hi herd of 70 cows with a RHA of 22,300 milk, 778 lbs. fat and a BAA of 106. Milking Rotates, Tonys, and Chairmen were predominate here. Nothing in it can harm yoi A voluntary program as the first step toward the control and eradication of swine brucellosis in Pennsylvania gets started this week, the State Department of Agriculture announced today. Officials said- swine affected with brucellosis (Bang’s disease) will continue to be a menace to the cattle population of the State from which the disease practically has been eliminated. Although killing frosts came a week after the normal Sept. 21 frost date for this area, damage in Lancaster County is counted in the millions of dollars. Most of the damage is in the tobacco crop which was only 80-90 percent harvested. The dol lar value of the damaged crop would have been much higher if the crop this year had been of bet ter quality. A Marietta blonde, Miss Dor othy Fletcher, 17, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Fletcher, was crowned “Miss Lancaster County” at the Ephrata Farm Show Thurs day night. She won the title in competition with 15 other contes tants. The crowning of “Miss Lan caster County” is a yearly event at the Ephrata Fair. A highly fitted Hereford steer took the Grand Championship at the Ephrata Fair Thursday night. The steer is owned by Miss Leona Augsberger, Reinholds. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Augsberger. Reserve championship went to an Angus steer owned and shown by David Zimmerman of R 1 Rein holds, son of Mr. and Mrs. John M. Zimmerman.
