How do you know whether a pattern is too complicated for your sewing skills? Consider your own limits, your ability to interpret directions, the time you are willing to give to your sewing, how much you enjoy figuring out compli cated to unusual details and how clearly the pattern company has interpreted the design. According to Maryetta Dorri cott, Delaware County Extension Home Economist, some high fash ion designers use some compli cated construction methods. They may even invent some clever ways to accomplish the result they want. If you are using a pattern which carries the designer’s name, you can expect to run into some such situation. You need to be flexible and real ize there are many ways to get the same results. You may need to forget some of your past teaching and use plain common sense on some of the construction prob lems. Focus on the effect the desig ner was trying to achieve and then you ’ll find it easier to figure out the instructions. If a pattern is labeled “designer fashion” without the name of a designer, it usually means that the pattern company has simplified the construction process somewhat and that an experienced seamstress will have few problems. This varies with the complexity of the design, howev Forecast Rr September 11-19, Nine Days and Nights of Sizzli TAR FILLED NIGHTS ON THE GRANDSTAND September 11—8:00 pm—Kool 8 The Gang September 12—8:00 pm— Lee Greenwood 8 George lone* September 13—6:30 pm—Chicago September 14—7:00 pm—The let* September IS—7:00 pm—loie Chitwood Thrill Show September 16—6:00 pm—The Best of the Bands September 17—8:00 pm—Alabama September 18—8:00 pm—Tom lone* September 19—6:30 8 9410 pm—Oak Ridge Boys Use enjov continuous FREE shows throughout the fairgrounds featuring the ever popular Nichols Brothers, Carla Wallenda, Hanneford Family Circus. Before you pay for a pattern, look at the envelope. There are usually line drawings which show up construction lines better than a photograph. Study these lines and read all the descriptive informa tion. Some patterns also show the outline of all pieces of the paltem. These, too, will give a clue to some of the problems you may encount er. Remember that the fewer pat tern pieces, the fewer problems you are likely to have. Most patterns give directions for interfacings, underlining or lining when suitable. For some high fash ion designs, this can be tricky. It’s difficult to get enough experience for all sewing problems one meets.
