Some of these teat dips contain germicides which are intended to aid in the control of contagious mastitis. Research is lacking, however, which demon strates effectiveness in regard to the control of contagious forms of mastitis with the sealant dips. In some cases we are observing increases in contagious mastitis where sealant dips are used on a continuous basis. Therefore, we are suggesting that sealant type dips be used as needed only for short periods of time, two to three months, when coliform mastitis is more prevalent such as during hot, humid weather. Dairy farmers are advised to use the standard germicidal teat dips without sealants as the basic product in their teat dipping program. national senior calf champion.
