Charolais Heifer Brings
$50,000 At National Sale
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - New and
established breeders alike took
part in the Bth National Charolais
Sale on Nov. 19 held during the
North American International
Livestock Exposition in Louisville,
Ky. Showcasting the breed, this
nationwide selection of 28 top
quality lots sold for an average
price of $9,538. The consignments
from 21 states and Canadian
provinces met with buyer demand,
as the offering included many
class winners and divisional
champions from the previous day’s
National Show. Buyers from 19
states, including Hawaii, and one
Canadian province purchased
cattle in this event.
Interest in the high-selling lot
began on June 23, 1986, when she
was named grand champion of the
National Junior Charolais Heifer
Show. That interest followed
through until auctioneer Stanley
Stout called her sold at $50,000. GF

Sealant
Teat Dips
Teat dips of the
sealant types have
shown some effective
ness against coliform
organisms which cause
mastitis, Steve Spencer
and Larry Hutchinson
of Penn State explained
in a report. Some of
these teat dips contain
germicides which are
intended to aid in the
control of contagious
mastitis.
Research is lacking,
however, which demon
strates effectiveness in
regard to the control of
contagious forms of
mastitis with the
sealant dips.
In some cases we are
observing increases in
contagious mastitis
where sealant dips are
used on a continuous
basis. Therefore, we
are suggesting that
sealant type dips be
used as needed only for
short periods of time,
two to three months,
when coliform mastitis
is more prevalent such
as during hot, humid
weather. Dairy farmers
are advised to use the
standard germicidal
teat dips without
sealants as the basic
product in their teat
dipping program.
